Bulldogs' regular-season win streak comes to end at 46

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Texas Lutheran's 46-game, regular-season win streak came to an end Sunday with a 7-2 loss to Trine (Ind.) in the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Bulldogs and Thunder met in the Gold Championship Bracket semifinal at the South Commons Complex Field No. 1.

The sixth-ranked Bulldogs finished in a tie for third in the 24-team tournament. The Classic included 12 teams ranked in the NFCA Top 25 at the end of the 2015 season. The tournament also had four teams - University of Texas at Tyler, Linfield, Kean and Alma - that played in the NCAA DIII Softball World Series last year.

TLU (16-1) completed the Leadoff Classic with a 4-1 record. The Bulldogs won Pool 6 over three games on Friday and Saturday and won the quarterfinal game against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.) on Saturday afternoon.

Sunday against Trine, the Bulldogs tied the game at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly from Jennifer Gallagher in the bottom of the third.

Alex Yarbrough put TLU on the board in the second with an RBI single that tied the game at 1-1.

The Thunder (9-4) broke the game open with four runs in the fourth. Trine sent eight batters to the plate, collected six hits and took advantage of one Bulldog error.

Trine belted out 15 hits to TLU's five. Erica Robles, Kaitlyn Clark, Kendra Marshall, Rachell Noble, and Lainey McCue each had at least two hits. Clark, Marshall and McCue each collected three hits.

Noble and McCue each drove in a pair of runs.

Amanda Lochte took the loss for the Bulldogs. She fell to 5-1.

Katie Saupe notched the win in relief for Trine. She moved to 2-1.

TLU returns to Texas and plays conference opponent Schreiner this Friday and Saturday in Kerrville, Texas. The Bulldogs and Mountaineers play a four-game series.
