COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Sixth-ranked Texas Lutheran pushed its season record to 14-0 with a pair of victories Friday at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Leadoff Classic. TLU defeated Western Connecticut 9-0 in five innings and No. 17 Central (Iowa) 5-3.
Nicole Snow (Tomball/Klein Oak) closed out the win over Western Connecticut with a walk-off grand slam in the fifth inning.
In the win over Central, reigning Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year
Jennifer Gallagher (Missouri City/Elkins) broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run double in the top of the seventh.
Veny Pizana (Odem/Odem) tossed 2-2/3 innings of hitless relief and picked up the win against Central. Pizana, a junior right-hander, improved to 3-0.
Grace Estes (Willis/Willis) and
Kirsten Whiteside (Belton/Belton) each drove in a run against The Dutch (10-4).
In the win over Western Connecticut (0-1), Gallagher drove in three runs, and
Kaymee Gooden (Mart/Mart/McLennan) had a pair of RBI.
In the early game,
Taylor Grissom (Spring/Klein Collins) picked up the five-hit shutout and improved to 5-0. She struck out three and surrendered five hits without a walk.
TLU clinched the top spot in Pool 6 with the two wins Friday. The Bulldogs close out pool play with a 9 a.m. contest against Piedmont (Ga.). Piedmont is 0-2 in the pool.
After the final game in pool play, TLU starts play in the Gold Championship Bracket, the top bracket in the 24-team Leadoff Classic. The first game in the Gold Bracket will be played at 3:30 p.m. central.
