Bulldogs complete three-game sweep of Hardin-Simmons

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran completed a three-game baseball sweep of Hardin-Simmons with 6-2 and 9-4 victories Saturday afternoon at TLU's Katt-Isbel Field.

The Bulldogs won the first game of the series 8-4 Friday night, also at Katt-Isbel.

In Saturday's doubleheader, the Bulldogs received excellent pitching performances from their two freshman starters - redshirt freshman right-hander Nathan Malinovsky and true freshman right-hander Cody Rimko.

Malinovsky went the distance in the early game - the 7-inning contest - and won his first game of the season. He struck out three, walked just one, and scattered four hits.

Rimko started the late game - the 9-inning contest - and tossed five shutout innings. He surrendered just two hits, struck out four and walked only one. Rimko also moved to 1-0 on the season.

TLU improved to 5-2 overall. HSU dropped to 2-4 with the non-conference losses.

In the first game Saturday, Trenton Ray hit a two-run home run to start the scoring in the Bulldogs' five-run second inning. Justin Law added a two-run triple in the frame. He scored on a throwing error on the triple.

Law later added an RBI single. He finished the day 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI.

Colby Schrade went 2-for-4 with two runs scored as the team's designated hitter in the early game.

In the 9-4 victory, the Bulldogs took advantage of seven wild pitches and seven walks issued by the first three HSU pitchers. TLU scored six runs in the second inning and never looked back.

Alejandro Gutierrez collected a pair of hits and scored two runs, and Law drove in two more runs. Schrade scored two more runs. Keaton Bohrmann doubled, drove in a run and scored a run.

TLU has one day off before returning to non-conference action, this time against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Bulldogs and Cru meet at 7 p.m. Monday at Katt-Isbel Field. TLU will have live video and live stats on tlubulldogs.com.
