SEGUIN, Texas -- Austin College survived a last-second, 53-yard field goal attempt by Texas Lutheran and sent the Bulldogs to their third straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference defeat with a 30-28 win Saturday at Bulldog Stadium.
Chadd Brown's last-gasp attempt came up short, hitting the back line of the endzone, about 10 feet below the cross bar. Brown's career long was 47 yards.
Austin College celebrated its first SCAC victory over the Bulldogs, who had won three consecutive SCAC Championships.
TLU's loss, and Southwestern's win over Trinity, ended any chance for a fourth straight Bulldog football championship in the SCAC.
Southwestern only needed to win Saturday to secure sole possession of the SCAC Championship. The Pirates celebrated their first SCAC title with a 20-7 home win over Trinity. The Pirates improved to 6-3 overall and to 5-0 in the SCAC.
TLU dropped to 2-7 overall and to 2-3 in the SCAC. The Bulldogs host Southwestern at 1 p.m. next Saturday in Bulldog Stadium.
TLU started the SCAC season at 2-0 before falling by four points to Southwestern (in Georgetown), by one point to Trinity (in San Antonio) and by two points to Austin College (in Seguin). The Bulldogs were 11-0 in SCAC play before the road loss to Southwestern.
Austin snapped a five-game losing streak overall and a six-game slide to TLU. The Kangaroos moved their overall record to 3-6 and their SCAC mark to 1-4.
The Bulldogs' rallied from 10 points down at the half to take a third-quarter lead. TLU took the opening drive of the second half and marched 80 yards in 12 plays, taking 5:53 off the clock, for a touchdown.
Marquis Barrolle, TLU's preseason All-American and all-time leading rusher, scored on a 14-yard scamper that cut the Austin College lead to 24-21.

J.B. Brown scoring play that covered nine yards. That drive measured 83 yards in nine plays and took 3:06.
Austin College took the ensuing kickoff and drove 71 yards in five plays for the go-ahead score, capped off with a Colt Collins 4-yard run. On the drive, facing a 3rd-and-10 from his own 29, Collins converted the third down and rumbled deep into TLU territory with a 65-yard run.
Collins, a 6-1 and 220-pound freshman from Princeton, Texas, did not start the game for Austin College, and he wasn't even listed on the Monday depth chart. It wasn't until Friday that Collins appeared on the depth chart as the back-up quarterback and in a new number, No. 6.
Collins rushed 16 times for 98 yards and two scores, and he went 11-for-18 through the air for 200 yards and two touchdowns.ÂÂ
Needing a field goal to win, TLU's last five drives ended with a punt, a turnover on downs, a fumble, an interception, and the 53-yard missed field goal.
TLU started its potential winning drive at its own 21 with only 45 seconds remaining and no timeouts. Galindo hit
Jekovan Holmes for 22 yards and Barrolle for 7 and 21 yards to get TLU down to the Austin College 29.
After spiking the ball to stop the clock, the Bulldogs were sacked on the very next play (a loss of seven yards) and had to spike the ball on third down to stop the clock. One second remained on the clock when Brown lined up for the 53-yarder.
Barrolle carried the ball a season-high 41 times and recorded a season-best 181 yards and three rushing touchdowns. He also caught three passes for 30 yards.
Galindo completed 18-of-25 for 199 yards and a score. He was intercepted once and sacked once. Holmes led TLU with four catches for 53 yards.
TLU senior defensive end
Brandon Stephens registered a career-high 13 tackles. He had a sack and 6.5 tackles for loss. He also forced a fumble and had an interception (off a tipped pass).
Emory Cuzze collected 11 tackles, and
Justin Thomas added seven.
Darian Candler produced six tackles and one tackle for loss.
The Bulldogs trailed 24-14 at the break despite 107 yards of rushing from Barrolle. The Ingleside, Texas native carried the ball 21 times in the first half and scored two touchdowns - of 16 and 7 yards.
TLU managed just 33 yards passing (a season low) in the first half. The Bulldogs were 5-of-9 with starter Galindo completing four and backup
Kyle Grona completing one.
Collins came into the contest in the first quarter and guided the Kangaroos to three touchdown drives in the second quarter. He generated an eight-yard TD run and then tossed TD passes to Blake Hollenbeck and Kyle Mucerino.
The connection from Collins to Mucerino came with just 1:34 to play in the first half. The Kangaroos went 60 yards in four plays.
TLU's first scoring drive covered just 16 yards on one play, on a Barrolle 16-yard run, after the Bulldogs recovered a fumbled punt.
The Bulldogs' second scoring drive took 12 plays, covered 76 yards and took 3:56 off the clock. Barrolle's 7-yard scoring run brought TLU within 17-14 at the 6:18 mark of the second quarter.
