SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran came up short in its bid to send retiring Head Coach
Danny Padron out on a winning note by dropping the 2016 season finale 35-31 to Southwestern.
Saturday afternoon at TLU's Bulldog Stadium, the Pirates completed a 6-0 run through the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and a two-game season sweep of the Bulldogs.
Kenneth Wynn Jr. snagged an eight-yard touchdown pass from Bryan Hicks for the game-winner at the 7:57 mark of the fourth quarter.
TLU's final drive advanced all the way down to the Southwestern 13 with less than 30 seconds to play. On 4th-and-3 from the 13,
Zach Galindo's last toss into the endzone was picked off by Nik Kelly.
The Bulldogs had three throws into the endzone on the final drive but could not come up with the winning score.
Southwestern, the 2016 SCAC Champion, ends its season at 7-3 overall. The Pirates won each of the two games against TLU by four points.
The Bulldogs lost their final four contests of the 2016 season by a combined 11 points. TLU dropped to 2-8 overall and to 2-4 in the SCAC with Saturday's loss.
A three-time SCAC Coach of the Year and three-time SCAC champion, Padron ends his TLU coaching career with 40 wins and 30 losses in seven seasons.
When Padron took the TLU job in January 2010, the Bulldogs were in the midst of a 13-game losing streak. From 2013-15, the Bulldogs were 25-5 with three conference championships, repeated Top 25 rankings and an NCAA Division III playoff berth under their belt.
Another three-time SCAC champion, TLU senior running back
Marquis Barrolle, closed out his career by putting together his best game of 2016. The 5-2, 150-pound All-American and all-time TLU rushing leader ran for a season-high 215 yards and a season-best three touchdowns against the Pirates. He added eight catches for 34 yards.
Barrolle's 59-yard TD run in the first quarter was his longest of the year. He also scored on a pair of six-yard runs. By the end of the first half, Barrolle already had 158 yards rushing and three scores.
Barrolle's 215 yards Saturday brought his school-record collegiate total to 3,991. He scored 38 career touchdowns (33 rushing and five receiving).
The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game on a
Chadd Brown 38-yard field goal at the 1:28 mark of the third quarter.
Senior tight end
Tri-Rice Van Buren corralled his second career receiving TD, a 33-yarder, to tie the game at 28 with 7:39 remaining in the third.
The game was tied at 21 at the half and tied at 28 entering the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs rolled up 518 yards of total offense and averaged 6.5 yards per play. TLU was 5-for-15 on third down and 1-for-2 on fourth down.

TLU junior quarterback
Zach Galindo completed 28-of-46 for 304 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Senior receiver
Caleb Oliver caught eight passes for 92 yards.
Bulldog senior linebacker
Darian Candler registered 12 total tackles and had 1.5 tackles for loss. Candler concluded his four-year TLU career with 289 career tackles, good for second on the TLU DIII-era total tackle list.
Justin Thomas led TLU in tackles Saturday, with 13 tackles. Thomas had nine solo tackles and four assists.
Senior linebacker Zach Cole led the Pirates with 13 total tackles.
The Bulldogs and Pirates each played their final SCAC football contest. Both teams will play as affiliate members of NCAA Division III's American Southwest Conference next season. All of TLU's and Southwestern's other collegiate varsity sports will remain in the SCAC.
