SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran nearly squandered a 26-point fourth quarter lead against Howard Payne, but the Bulldogs held on for a 74-71 win Thursday night in Memorial Gymnasium.
TLU (1-1) led 61-37 at the start of the fourth and moved the lead to 63-37 following a
Jordan Estrada layup with 9:20 remaining in the game.
HPU (0-2) rallied behind the three-point shot in the fourth. The Yellow Jackets scored 34 points and made seven three-pointers in the final quarter.
HPU out-scored TLU 34-13 in the fourth.
Presley McKethan made seven threes for HPU and scored a game-high 23.
Kristen Lye led the Bulldogs with 22 points and 12 rebounds. The senior forward made 9-of-16 shots and had two assists and a steal.
Savannah Hight added eight points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.
Kasey Hairell came off the Bulldog bench to score eight points and grab seven rebounds.
TLU made 54.7 percent of its total shots for the game, but the Bulldogs were hurt by 29 turnovers. Valerie Matlock had six steals for the Yellow Jackets.
The Bulldogs' next game is set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Seguin against LeTourneau University.
