GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Southwestern returned two third-quarter kickoffs for touchdowns (the second on an onside attempt) and survived two final Texas Lutheran drives to win 42-38 and snap TLU's 11-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win streak.
At Georgetown ISD's Birkelbach Field, Southwestern moved to 4-3 overall and to 3-0 in the SCAC with the league win over the Bulldogs.
TLU, the three-time defending SCAC champion, dropped to 2-5 overall and to 2-1 in the SCAC.
The SCAC football season is at the halfway point. TLU has SCAC games remaining at Trinity and at home against Austin College and Southwestern.
The Bulldogs drove down to the Southwestern 26-yard line with 3:14 to play before an incomplete pass turned the ball back to the Pirates.
TLU stopped Southwestern on the next possession and forced a punt to get the ball back at the Bulldog 18 with 48 seconds to play.
Zach Galindo's desperation pass on the final play of the game was intercepted at the Southwestern 14.

Barrolle finished the night with 3,550 career yards. Johnson, an All-American running back that played for Texas Lutheran from 1969 to 1972, finished his career with 3,537. The Johnson rushing mark stood for 44 years.
The traditional kickoff return for TD by the Pirates went for 89 yards (by Nik Kelly) at the 13:26 mark of the third quarter. It was directly preceded by a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown by senior linebacker
Darian Candler.
The Dante Smith 39-yard kickoff return for a score, on the failed TLU onside attempt, came on the heels of
Jacob Tingle's 14-yard scoring reception from Galindo.
TLU scored on three occasions in the second half to cut the SU lead down to four three different times. But the Bulldogs never took the lead.
Galindo threw a pair of TD passes to
Caleb Oliver (31 and 21 yards) and had scoring strikes to Tingle and
Reggie Jackson (14 yards).
Oliver finished the night with six grabs for 99 yards and the two scores.
Candler recorded a double-digit tackle game for a seventh straight game in 2016. Candler ended the game with 10 stops, including seven solos.
