SHERMAN, Texas -- Sophomore linebacker
Emory Cuzze picked off an Austin College pass at the TLU 20 to seal Texas Lutheran's 17-13 conference road win Saturday at Apple Stadium.
Cuzze (Buda/Hays) intercepted Cooper Woodyard's pass with 30 seconds to play in the game. The Kangaroos had 2nd-and-10 at the Bulldogs' 39-yard line when Woodyard released his final throw.
TLU ran out the clock after two Austin College timeouts and celebrated the program's 11th consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory. TLU is 11-0 all-time in the SCAC after joining the league in the 2013 season.
The Bulldogs are the three-time defending SCAC champions.
TLU improved to 2-4 overall and to 2-0 in the SCAC with the road win.
Austin College dropped to 2-4 overall and to 0-2 in the SCAC.
Cuzze finished the day with nine total tackles, a sack of eight yards, 1.5 total tackles for loss, an interception and a quarterback hurry.
Fellow linebacker
Darian Candler (Humble/Atascocita) hit double digits in tackles for a sixth straight game. He recorded 11 total tackles, a tackle for loss and a quarterback hurry.
TLU's defense held Austin College to 4-for-17 on third down. The Kangaroos managed just two Cesar Ruiz field goals in the second half.
The Bulldogs were shutout in the second half after taking a 17-7 lead into the break.
Jekovan Holmes (San Antonio/O'Connor) caught a pair of TD passes from
Zach Galindo (San Antonio/O'Connor) in the first half. Holmes started the TLU scoring with a 23-yard strike from Galindo that capped TLU's game-opening drive. TLU went 75 yards in eight plays.
Holmes caught a three-yard pass from Galindo in the second quarter. That scoring grab gave Holmes his 23rd career receiving TD and moved him past Cameron Peavy on the career receiving TD list.
Only Jason Trahan, with 31, has more TLU touchdown catches than Holmes. The sophomore Holmes has caught those 23 TD passes in 16 games.
Galindo finished the day 26-for-39 with two TDs and no picks. He was sacked twice.
TLU senior
Marquis Barrolle (Ingleside/Ingleside) rushed for 110 yards on 26 carries and moved within 63 yards of breaking TLU's career rushing record (held by Royce Johnson).
The Bulldogs hit the road next week to face Southwestern, now 2-0 in the SCAC after a 48-0 road win over the Trinity Tigers.
Kickoff next Saturday in Georgetown (at GISD's Birkelbach Field) is set for 6 p.m.
