SEGUIN, Texas -- Austin College battled back from early double-digit deficits and secured a key Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory with a 70-67 overtime win Saturday against Texas Lutheran.
In TLU's Memorial Gymnasium, Austin College shook off the effects of a late-regulation three from the Bulldog's
Adelaide Wenzel that forced overtime. The Kangaroos then overcame a quick five-point deficit in the extra session.
The loss snapped TLU's 16-game conference win streak at home. The loss was TLU's first home loss in women's basketball as a member of the SCAC. (TLU joined the league in 2013-14 and was 16-0 in the SCAC in Memorial Gymnasium until Saturday.)
TLU led by three with 1:18 to play in OT after a pair of
Bailey Champion (San Antonio/Reagan) free throws. Austin cut the TLU lead to one on a layup from Kali Vittallo and took the lead 40 seconds later on a three-point play from Olivia Bailey, who finished the night with nine points and 11 rebounds.
A free throw from freshman center Bryce Frank put the Austin advantage at three with five seconds to play.
TLU's last-second three-pointer from
Cierra Jordan (Llano/Llano) fell short.
Frank powered the Kangaroos (9-4, 3-0 SCAC) to the road win. A 6-foot-2 native of Grandbury, Texas, Frank scored 15 of her game-high 28 in the second half and overtime. She also pulled down 11 boards.
Vittallo added 13 points and three rebounds for the Kangaroos.
TLU dropped to 6-8 overall and to 2-1 in the SCAC with the loss.
Taylor Dydalewicz (Dripping Springs/Lake Travis) scored 16 to lead the Bulldogs. The senior forward hit the 1,000-point mark for her career. She achieved the milestone in the first half with her eighth point.
Wenzel (Victoria/Victoria East) registered 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists for TLU.
Savannah Hight (San Antonio/Brandeis) added 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
TLU shot 48.4 percent in the first half and held Austin to 34.4 percent.
In the second half, Austin improved to 42.9 percent shooting and held the Bulldogs to 26.7 percent. The Bulldogs went 2-for-7 (28.6 percent) from the field in the overtime.
TLU was 5-for-24 from the three-point line for the game. Austin went 5-for-21.
TLU continues conference play next Friday and Saturday with road games at Trinity University and Schreiner University. TLU will have live video and radio (Seguin's KWED 1580 AM) on tlubulldogs.com for the Trinity road game.
