TLU Women's Basketball completes twin bill sweep of Trinity

SAN ANTONIO -- Texas Lutheran Women's Basketball finished a basketball doubleheader sweep of Trinity University with a 65-55 road win Friday night in Sams Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs' victory closed out an evening of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play that also saw TLU Men's Basketball post a 71-66 victory over the Tigers.

TLU won both ends of the road doubleheader at Trinity for the first time since joining the SCAC for the 2013-14 season. TLU Women's Basketball won on Trinity's home floor for the first time since winning the 2013-14 SCAC Championship game over the Tigers.

The Bulldogs expanded a three-point halftime lead to 14 in the fourth quarter. Cierra Jordan (Llano/Llano) hit a three and Autumn Shead (Pflugerville/Connally) hit a pair of free throws to give the Bulldogs the 14-point edge with seven minutes to play.

Trinity chipped into the Bulldog lead and had it down to three with 4:48 to play. Bulldog sophomore guard Adelaide Wenzel (Victoria/Victoria East) stopped the Tiger run with a three-pointer, pushing the TLU lead to 52-46 with 4:27 remaining.

The Bulldog lead hit 10 again and then dropped to six with 1:04 to play. Jordan then sealed the Bulldog victory with a banked-in three that put TLU up nine with 50 seconds to play.

Jordan scored 12 points in 15 minutes for the Bulldogs. She made all three of her three-point attempts and went 4-for-6 from the field.

As a team, the Bulldogs went 5-for-8 from the arc and held Trinity to 7-for-26. The Bulldogs shot 45.2 percent overall and went to the free throw line 32 times (making 22).

Trinity shot just 27.7 percent for the game. The Tigers made just 18 field goals on 65 shot attempts.

Savannah Hight (San Antonio/Brandeis) led TLU with 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting. She went 5-for-8 at the free throw line. Hight added seven rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks.

Wenzel was the only other Bulldog in double figures. She scored 10 and had four rebounds and two steals. Kristen Lye (San Antonio/Clark) collected eight points, six rebounds and three steals.

Monica Holguin led the Tigers with 17. The Tigers played without All-SCAC post Anecia Richardson, who was injured in the previous Trinity contest.

TLU out-rebounded Trinity 42-34 and overcame 22 turnovers.

The Bulldogs continue SCAC play Saturday with a 6 p.m. road contest in Kerrville, Texas against Schreiner University.
