SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran won another close Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game as junior forward
Zach Behr made a leaning layup with five seconds to play to lift the Bulldogs to a 73-72 home win Friday over University of Dallas.
In TLU's Memorial Gymnasium, Behr scored off the right block, putting TLU in front by one. Dallas' last-second heave from 10 feet beyond the three-point line glanced off the rim.
TLU, the defending SCAC champion, won its third straight overall and moved to 2-0 in conference play. The Bulldogs improved to 10-3 overall.
Dallas dropped to 5-5 overall and to 1-1 in the SCAC.
TLU trailed by three with 2:07 to play but scored on consecutive layups from
Jordan Kouremetis and
Harris Jowell to take a one-point lead, 71-70, with 52 seconds remaining.
Prince Giadolor gave Dallas a one-point lead with a layup with 31 seconds to play.
TLU shot just 42.2 percent for the game and made five of 18 three-pointers (27.8 percent). Dallas hit 48.3 percent of its total shots and 29.4 percent (5-for-17) of its three-point attempts.
Point guard
Sterling Holmes led the Bulldogs with 21 points. He went 8-for-15 from the floor, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists. He added three steals.
Paris Marquez was the only other Bulldog in double figures. The freshman scored 11.
Tom Kaiser paced the Crusaders with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Lorenzo Gonzalez added 12 points, five rebounds and two assists.
TLU continues SCAC play Saturday with a 4 p.m. contest against Austin College.
