SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran shook off a three-game losing skid with an impressive 86-71 home win Saturday over defending Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference champion Southwestern.
At TLU's Memorial Gymnasium, TLU out-scored Southwestern by 10, 25-15, in the final quarter.
TLU, part of a 2014-15 regular season tri-championship with Southwestern and Trinity, improved to 5-7 overall and to 1-0 in the SCAC.
Southwestern, the 2015 SCAC Tournament champion and a 2015 NCAA DIII tournament qualifier, fell to 3-9 overall and to 0-1 in the SCAC.
TLU junior forward
Savannah Hight (San Antonio/Brandeis) scored 15 of her team-high 19 in the first half, and fellow junior forward
Kristen Lye (San Antonio/Clark) poured in 14 of her 16 in the second half.
Lye led TLU with 10 rebounds. She added three assists.
The Bulldogs made 59.1 percent of their total shots in the second half. TLU was 3-for-5 from the three-point line in the first two quarters.
TLU finished at 48.2 percent for the game and held the Pirates to 37.1 percent. Southwestern made only 12 of its 34 shot attempts in the second half.
Olivia Podaras led the Pirates with 17 points. She added seven rebounds and three steals.
Southwestern guard Audrey Garcia made a run at a triple-double. She finished with 14 points, seven assists and six rebounds.
Bailey Champion (San Antonio/Reagan) and
Taylor Dydalewicz (Dripping Springs/Lake Travis) added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Cierra Jordan (Llano/Llano) recorded seven points and four rebounds off the TLU bench.
