SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran scored 42 unanswered points, including four touchdowns over the final 4:59 of the first half, and romped to a 56-28 non-conference home win Saturday over Southwestern Assemblies of God.
TLU, out of the NCAA Division III, improved to 3-1 overall. SAGU, out of the NAIA, fell to 3-1.
At TLU's Bulldog Stadium, TLU and SAGU were tied at 14 midway through the second quarter after the Lions scored on a Jeremy Carr 25-yard pass from C.J. Collins.
The Bulldogs responded less than three minutes later with a 61-yard pass from
Trenton White to
Caleb Oliver to re-take the lead.
On the Lions' next offensive play from scrimmage, TLU linebacker
Darian Candler sacked Collins and forced a fumble, recovered by the Bulldogs' Tre LaGrone at the SAGU 22.
Two plays after the fumble, the Bulldogs were in the endzone. TLU ran an end-around with All-American running back
Marquis Barrolle sweeping to the right and then flipping the ball to receiver
Jekovan Holmes running back to the left. Holmes gained 19 yards on the carry and took the ball down to the SAGU 3.
Barrolle scored on the next play to give TLU a 28-14 lead.
One play after the TLU kickoff, SAGU fumbled again, and TLU recovered. Running back Chris Jenkins fumbled at the SAGU 39 on a hit by senior defensive end
Jonathan Olonade. Bulldog safety
Justus Parker picked up the ball at the SAGU 36 and rumbled 33 yards down to the three-yard line.
After an incomplete pass by the Bulldogs, Barrolle scored his second TD of the night and increased the TLU lead to 35-14.
But the Bulldogs were not done in the half. A quick SAGU three-and-out gave TLU the ball at its own 34 with 2:47 remaining. On 2nd-and-4 from the SAGU 48, White tossed a lateral to receiver (and former quarterback)
Logan Thompson, who hit a wide-open
A.J. Saucedo downfield for a 48-yard score.
TLU took the 42-14 lead into the half.
The Bulldogs added single TDs in the third and fourth quarters on scoring receptions of 11 and 30 yards to Holmes. White connected with Holmes on an 11-yard scoring play, and back-up QB
Zach Galindo hit Holmes for a 30-yard score. Galindo and Holmes played together at San Antonio O'Connor.
The Bulldog defense produced the first points of the night. Senior linebacker
Jake Bahr stepped in front of a Collins pass at the SAGU 3 and ran untouched into the endzone. The pick-six came at the 11:27 mark of the first quarter.
The TLU defense produced a defensive touchdown, 11 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions. Parker led the defense with 11 total tackles, a half-tackle for loss, a fumble recovery, a fumble return of 33 yards, and two pass break-ups.
Thirteen different Bulldogs had at least a half-tackle for loss.
The Bulldogs were out-gained by the Lions 473 to 398, but TLU did its damage thanks to four SAGU turnovers deep in its own territory. The Bulldogs were 4-of-4 on red zone scoring chances.
White, TLU's senior quarterback, was 17-for-26 for 194 yards and three scores. Holmes ended the night with six catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns. Oliver collected three passes for 90 yards and a score.
The Bulldogs rushed for only 79 total yard on 33 carries. Barrolle, injured in the third quarter last week, played sparingly but still flashed his familiar explosiveness in scoring the two rushing TDs.
TLU concludes its four-game homestand with a 6 p.m. Homecoming game next Saturday against Howard Payne. Pre-game coverage on Seguin's AM 1580 KWED begins at 5:30 p.m. from Bulldog Stadium. Live video and live stats will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
