SEGUIN, Texas --
Drake Dowling's touchdown return of a blocked field goal and
Jekovan Holmes' three TD grabs propelled the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs to a 49-20 Homecoming win Saturday in front of a record crowd of 3,378 at TLU's Bulldog Stadium at Frank L. Dunne Field.
Dowling (Katy/Katy) recovered a field goal block by teammate
Matt McCullough (Georgetown/Georgetown) and finally picked up the football at midfield. The field goal was blocked inside the 30-yard line, and several players had a shot at recovering the ball as the football was continually batted to midfield, where Dowling finally made the scoop at the TLU 45. He scored at the 7:37 mark of the third quarter and gave TLU a 35-14 lead.
TLU won its third straight game and improved to 4-1 overall with the non-conference win.
HPU dropped to 0-5 in 2015 and saw its overall losing skid hit nine games.
Holmes, the first-year player from San Antonio (O'Connor), hauled in three more touchdown passes to bring his season total to nine receiving touchdowns.
Bulldog senior quarterback
Trenton White (Sachse/Sachse) threw two of the TD passes to Holmes. The duo connected on scoring plays of six and eight yards. Back-up quarterback
Zach Galindo (San Antonio/O'Connor) found his old high school teammate for a 3-yard score in the fourth quarter.
White completed 20 of 27 passes for 271 yards and four touchdowns. He also tossed a 26-yard scoring pass to
Chase Ragusa (Cypress/Cypress Woods/UIW) and an 18-yard touchdown to
Caleb Oliver (Pearland/Lutheran South).
Ragusa and Holmes each caught nine passes. Ragusa had nine grabs for 80 yards, and Holmes caught nine for 78.
Bulldog senior running back
A.J. Saucedo (San Antonio/Central Catholic) rushed 15 times for 113 yards and one score. He had a long of 37. Junior back
Marquis Barrolle (Ingleside/Ingleside) carried the ball 10 times for 64 yards, with a long of 23.
HPU's Colby Mica caught eight passes for 86 yards and scored on TD grabs of 11 and 21 yards. Mica's 11-yarder gave Howard Payne a quick 7-0 lead with 12:23 to play in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets turned a blocked punt into the Mica TD catch.
In addition to scoring the touchdown on the blocked field goal, Dowling led the Bulldogs in tackles, with 10. Freshman safety
Justus Parker (La Vernia/La Vernia) added eight tackles.
TLU held the Yellow Jackets to 245 yards of total offense. HPU was 3-of-14 on third-down conversions and 0-of-2 on fourth-down tries.
The Bulldogs scored on six of eight trips into the red zone and held HPU to 0-for-2 in red zone trips.
After a 3-1 record over four consecutive home games, the Bulldogs hit the road to Marshall, Texas for next Saturday's 6 p.m. game against East Texas Baptist.
