Baseball drops pair of games to begin crucial series at Centenary

SHREVEPORT, La. â€" Texas Lutheran Baseball saw its 10-game SCAC winning streak snapped, and ended up dropping a pair of games on the road against Centenary on Saturday.

TLU dropped the first game 5-4 and the second one 2-0. The two losses means Centenary will host next weekend's SCAC Baseball Championships, as the Bulldogs needed to win at least two of the three games to earn that right. An SCAC co-regular season title is still within reach for TLU, if it can win the series finale at 1 p.m. tomorrow.

The two losses dropped the Bulldogs' record to 25-11 overall and 13-4 in the SCAC. Centenary improved to 21-13 overall and 14-3 in the SCAC with the wins.

The Bulldogs came back from a 4-2 deficit to even the score 4-4 in the seventh inning of the first game, but Centenary scored once in the bottom of the seventh to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

TLU scored first, getting a two-run double down the right field line from Alejandro Gutierrez (Pharr, Texas) in the third inning. The double scored both Tony Gennusa and Holden Bryant.

The Bulldogs held that 2-0 lead for an inning, before Centenary got its offense going in the fourth.  The Gents put up four runs in the frame, with the final two coming via a bases-loaded walk and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.

The score remained 4-2 until the seventh inning, when TLU launched a comeback. The inning was started with an RBI double from Keaton Bohrmann. Justin Law tied the game up at 4-4 with another run-scoring double.

The tie was short lived though, as Centenary retook the lead in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single from Cole Lavergne.

Aaron Aleman (Corpus Christi, Texas) got the start for the Bulldogs. The ace of TLU's staff, and arguably the best pitcher in the SCAC this season, struggled uncharacteristically with his control. He walked three and hit five other batters in his three and 2/3 innings of work. He gave up four runs on three hits.

Lincoln Baylor (Schertz, Texas) entered in relief of Aleman in the fourth inning and pitched the rest of the game. The junior took the loss, though he pitched well. He gave up just one run on three hits while striking out four.

The Bulldogs finished with 10 hits, but left 12 on base. Gennusa (Kingwood, Texas) led the way with a 3-for-4 performance. The senior scored a pair of runs.

The Bulldog bats were held in check by Centenary starter Layton Tromba in the second game. Tromba tossed six innings of shutout ball, while the Centenary bullpen did the rest of the work. The Bulldogs managed six hits in the game.

TLU received a good effort from its starter Thomas Harwell (Humble, Texas). The senior went the distance and took the hard-luck loss, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits. He struck out four.

The first run was scored in the first inning, with Centenary scoring an unearned run on an RBI single. The second run came in the fourth inning off another RBI single.

Gennusa had half of TLU's six hits. The senior finished 3-for-4.
