Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball offense explodes for 16 runs in blowout win over Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas â€" Texas Lutheran Baseball rolled to its fifth straight SCAC win and started a three-game road series against Schreiner in a big way, defeating the Mountaineers 16-1 on Thursday afternoon.

The Bulldog offense plowed its way to 16 runs on 22 hits, and got a 5-for-6 performance from Keaton Bohrmann (San Antonio, Texas). The junior third baseman scored four runs and drove in a pair. One of his five hits went for two bases. The rest were singles.

Texas Lutheran pounded out seven extra-base hits on the day â€" four doubles and three triples.

One of the triples came from Alex Gutierrez (Pharr, Texas) in the third inning and helped open up a substantial lead for the Bulldogs. With the bases loaded, Gutierrez's triple cleared the bases, putting the Bulldogs up 4-0.

Gutierrez had himself a day at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. The junior was just a home run shy of the cycle, notching a single, double and triple.

With the win, TLU improved to 19-9 overall and 8-2 in the SCAC, moving the Bulldogs ahead of Centenary for second place in the SCAC standings. Schreiner fell to 4-21 (1-6 SCAC) with the loss.

Although the bats were on fire on Thursday, senior right-hander Aaron Aleman (Corpus Christi, Texas) didn't need all that offensive support. Aleman came within two outs of completing a third straight complete-game shutout. Schreiner managed one run in the ninth, before Aleman exited with one out in the frame.

The senior stretched his scoreless innings streak to 28 innings before that ninth inning. He finished with eight and 1/3 innings of work, giving up one run on four hits.  He struck out seven and walked two. That ninth inning was also the first time in three games a base runner had reached third base against Aleman.

Reece Rodriguez (New Braunfels, Texas) came in from the bullpen to finish the game for the Bulldogs. He got the final two outs without allowing a hit.

Texas Lutheran ended the third inning up 5-0 and scored once more in the fifth to make it 6-0. The Bulldogs really opened up the score in the later innings, scoring 10 runs in the final three frames. The scoring binge began in the seventh with an Austin Frick RBI triple. Tony Gennusa also tripled in the frame as the Bulldogs scored four times in the seventh.

TLU would score five more runs in the ninth inning on five hits, all of them singles.

Frick (Katy, Texas) finished 2-for-2 with a double and a triple. The sophomore notched two RBI and a run.

The Bulldogs and Mountaineers will meet up again for a doubleheader to close out the three-game set. The first game is set to start at noon.
