Justin Law's three-run home run helped power the Texas Lutheran baseball team to its 10
th straight SCAC win, as they defeated Southwestern 10-4 on Wednesday night.
Â
The Bulldogs, ranked 27
th in the ABCA Coaches Poll, were down 2-0 when play was halted on Saturday due to rain. They cranked out 10 runs and seven hits in four innings after play was resumed Wednesday.
Â
TLU improved to 25-9 overall with the win and 13-3 in the SCAC. They sit atop the conference standings, tied in the loss column with Centenary, which owns a 10-2 conference mark.
Â
The game was restarted with the Bulldogs in a jam. The Pirates had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the fifth, already leading 2-0.
Lincoln Baylor was called upon to pitch for TLU on the restart, and induced a pop fly to get out of the inning.
Â
That was the first big momentum-changing play. The second came in the seventh when Law (Houston, Texas) cranked the first pitch of his at-bat over the right field fence for a three-run homer. The homerun, Law's fourth on the year, gave the Bulldogs a 7-4 lead they would never relinquish.
Â
After getting out of that jam in the fifth inning, the Bulldogs responded by scoring their first run of the game in the bottom of the frame. The run came on a
Tony Gennusa (Kingwood, Texas) RBI single.
Â
The Bulldogs would tie things up, and take the lead, in the sixth.
Klaus Bohrmann's (San Antonio, Texas) sacrifice fly tied the game.
Alejandro Gutierrez (Pharr, Texas) came around to score on a Southwestern error later in the inning.
Â
TLU would not have the lead for long though, as Southwestern scored twice in the top of the seventh to retake the lead.
Â
Keaton Bohrmann (San Antonio, Texas) evened the score in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single. Law opened the game up with his three-run shot.
Â
The Bulldogs added three more insurance runs in the eighth.
Â
Baylor (Schertz, Texas) earned the win, improving to 2-0 on the year. After getting out of that fifth-inning jam, he worked a 1-2-3 sixth before giving up a pair of runs in the seventh.
Â
Aaron Aleman (Corpus Christi, Texas) came in to start the eighth and worked a two-inning save. The senior came out of the bullpen for the first time this year and gave up just one hit.
Â
The Bulldogs will enjoy their weekend off of SCAC play this weekend. They play the final non-conference contest of their year at home at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 21 against Mary Hardin-Baylor. After that, TLU will take on Centenary in a series that could determine a conference title and the right to host the SCAC Championship.
