Game Recap: Baseball |

Harwell's career night helps Baseball to Saturday split at Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas â€" Thomas Harwell struck out a career-high 15 and tossed a complete game as Texas Lutheran won the second game of Saturday's doubleheader 7-1 against Southwestern.

The Bulldogs dropped the first game 5-3, but won two of the three games during the non-conference road series. The Bulldogs improved to 11-6 with the split, while Southwestern moved to 5-6.

The Bulldogs put up seven runs in the series finale, but they only needed two, as they received an outstanding effort from Harwell on the mound. Harwell (Humble, Texas) earned his second win of the season, moving to 2-1 on the year. The senior went the distance, striking out 15 of the 31 batters he faced. He gave up just four hits on the night.

His previous career-high strikeout mark was six, which came earlier this year against UT-Tyler. He held the Pirates hitless through the final five innings.

The Bulldogs wasted no time getting their offense going in the series finale, scoring three runs and racking up two hits in the top of the first. Justin Law drove in the game's first run, as Riley Schaeffer scored on a groundball. Law would reach base after an error by the Southwestern second baseman.

The other two runs of the inning were driven in by Klaus Bohrmann's (San Antonio, Texas) two-run double to left center.

The Pirates were held hitless for the first two innings, but got on the board in the third. They scratched across a run on two hits, with the run being scored off an RBI double by Will Cates.

The Bulldogs would build their advantage back up to three, leading 4-1 after Tony Gennusa's sacrifice fly scored Holden Bryant.

They would add another insurance run in the top of the seventh via a Law single that scored Keaton Bohrmann, who led off the inning with a triple.

The insurance runs continued to come in the eighth, with the Bulldogs opening up a 7-1 advantage with a two-run single by Law (Houston, Texas). The junior finished 3-for-5 with four RBI in the game.

In the first game, the Bulldogs undone by Southwestern's four-run third inning. The Pirates loaded the bases with nobody out to start the inning and the first two runs came from an RBI single by Ben Little. The third run was scored from a sacrifice fly and an RBI single capped off the inning.

The Bulldogs actually jumped out front in that game, scoring in the top of the first. Tony Gennusa led off with a triple, but was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice by Alejandro Gutierrez. Gutierrez would come around to score the first run on a Keaton Bohrmann single.

After falling behind 4-1, the Bulldogs answered right back, scoring twice in the top of the fourth. The damage was done by Austin Frick, who laced a two-run, two-out double down the left field line.

That's the closest TLU would get though, as Southwestern added a run in the sixth and held off the Bulldog offense the rest of the way to clinch the win. The Bulldogs didn't notch a hit in the final three innings.

The Bulldogs used two pitchers in the game. Dylan Drgac (Caldwell, Texas) took the loss. He tossed the game's first three and 1/3 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits.

Lincoln Baylor (Schertz, Texas) came in for Drgac in the fourth inning. The junior finished the game, throwing two and 2/3 innings and giving up one run on three hits.

The Bulldogs open up SCAC play next weekend at home with a three-game set against Austin College. Things get going with the series opener at 7 p.m. Friday, March 13. The series wraps up with a doubleheader the next day starting at 1 p.m.
