Baseball secures wild 12-7 extra-inning win over Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas â€" Texas Lutheran Baseball grabbed its third straight win, defeating Southwestern 12-7 in 12 innings in a wild road game on Friday night.

The Bulldogs scored five runs in the top of the 12th, with the winning run being scored off a Southwestern error. They followed up that run with a two-run single from Alex Gutierrez (Pharr, Texas) and a two-run double from Tony Gennusa (Kingwood, Texas).

Texas Lutheran improved to 10-5 with the win on Friday, while Southwestern dropped to 4-5. The contest was a non-conference affair, despite both teams competing in the SCAC.

Texas Lutheran got its offense going early, blasting its way to a 5-0 lead through three innings.

After falling behind 6-5 heading to the ninth inning, the Bulldogs stayed alive with Gutierrez coming home after a Gennusa sacrifice fly.

Gennusa finished the game 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. The Bulldog offense continued to click, racking up 13 hits. The Bulldogs have scored in double figures in each of the past three games.

The game started the way the Bulldogs imagined, with Gennusa leading off with a double and Zach Jacobs following with a single. Keaton Bohrmann hit into a double play, but Gennusa scored, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage.

In the second inning the Bulldogs once again saw the first two batters reach base, with Matt King and Lincoln Baylor both singling to start the frame. King would come around and score later in the inning after a Holden Bryant bunt single.

The Bulldogs opened up the gap in the third with three more runs. For the third straight inning, the first two batters reached base for the Bulldogs. Jacobs (Brenham, Texas) led off with a walk, and Bohrmann (San Antonio, Texas) drove him in with a double. Klaus Borhmann drove in his brother with an RBI double of his own. The Bulldogs capped off the scoring with Klaus Bohrmann scoring off a Southwestern error.

Aaron Aleman (Corpus Christi, Texas) got the start for TLU and turned in an impressive outing. He gave up just three hits and one run in seven innings of work. The Pirates' only run came in the fourth inning off an RBI single. The senior struck out seven during his seven innings

The Bulldogs ran into trouble when Aleman came out after the seventh inning. Britton Hawes entered the game to start the eighth and a mixture of infield hits and TLU errors led to a five-run inning for Southwestern, giving the Pirates their first lead of the game at 6-5.

The Bulldogs gave up three hits and made three errors in the inning and the go-ahead run was scored off a wild pitch.

Gennusa's sacrifice fly extended the game into extra innings, and the Bulldogs took the lead again in the 10th when Keaton Bohrmann came around to score off another Southwestern error. The Bulldogs took advantage of six Southwestern errors for the game, with eight of their 12 runs being unearned.

Southwestern stayed alive in their half of the 10th inning though, with Robert Wehman notching an RBI single to tie things back up at 7-7.

The Bulldogs and Pirates will wrap up their three-game set with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
