SEGUIN â€" After falling behind by four early on, Texas Lutheran Baseball rattled off 11 straight runs to secure an 11-4 non-conference home win over DeSales on Wednesday afternoon at Katt-Isbel Field.
Â
The Bulldog offense was firing on all cylinders for the second straight game, racking up 16 hits after collecting 21 in its last game, a 25-9 win over Centenary.
Â
On Wednesday, the Bulldogs had seven extra-base hits. They were 3-for-3 with runners on third base and 8-for-17 in RBI opportunities.
Â
The win improved Texas Lutheran's record to 9-5 on the year. They continued their strong play at Katt-Isbel, now owning a 6-1 mark at home. The loss dropped DeSales to 2-2 on the season.
Â
In what has been a constant early this season, the Bulldogs were paced by leadoff man
Tony Gennusa. The senior from Kingwood, Texas went 4-for-5 on the day, racking up a game-high three RBI and tallying two runs. He leads the SCAC with 22 runs scored on the year.
Â
All four of the centerfielder's hits went for extra bases, as he racked up three doubles and a triple. His RBI double in the sixth helped key a three-run inning, and his RBI triple in the eighth helped the Bulldogs to a four-run frame.
Â
While Gennusa was a force on offense, the Bulldogs also needed the help of
Lincoln Baylor (Schertz, Texas) on the mound. The junior came out of the bullpen in the fourth inning and kept DeSales at bay after it had already scored four runs in the first two innings.
Â
Baylor earned the win, pitching 3 and 1/3 innings of shutout baseball and allowing just one hit. He has now tossed 6 and 2/3 total innings this year and is yet to allow a run.
Â
It was
Aaron Milone (Houston, Texas) who got the start for the Bulldogs. The freshman allowed an unearned run in the first inning, but ran into more trouble in the second, allowing three runs in the frame.
Â
The freshman bounced back though, sitting DeSales down in order in the third after TLU had scored two in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit in half.
Â
TLU tied things up in the fourth inning.
Zach Jacobs led the inning off with a double.
Matt King followed with a single and advanced to second on a DeSales error. With runners on second and third,
Austin Frick grounded out to shortstop, scoring Jacobs.
Holden Bryant followed up with another RBI groundout, scoring King.
Â
The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game in the sixth inning. King got the inning started with a leadoff double, and with one out, a Bryant infield single put runners on the corners. King scored on a balk, then Bryant was driven in by Gennusa's RBI double. Alex Gutierrez drove Gennusa in with a single to right field.
Â
The Bulldogs scored four more insurance runs in the eighth inning to build that 11-4 advantage.
Â
Texas Lutheran's pitching staff allowed just two hits after the second inning.
Britton Hawes (Salado, Texas) and
Hunter Roberts (Montgomery, Texas) pitched the eighth and ninth innings, respectively to wrap up the game.
Â
TLU will hit the road for its next series, a non-conference matchup against SCAC-foe Southwestern. The three-game set is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Friday, March 6 in Georgetown, Texas. The two teams will play a doubleheader the next day starting at 2 p.m.
