SEGUIN â€" Texas Lutheran used a three-run first inning and a dominant pitching performance from
Aaron Aleman to take the first game of Sunday's home doubleheader 6-0 against Trinity. The Bulldogs dropped game two 12-2.
Â
TLU moved to 14-7 (3-2 SCAC) with the split, while Trinity moved to 14-5 (3-2 SCAC).
Â
Aleman (Corpus Christi, Texas) was simply dominant against the No. 12-ranked Tigers. The senior went the distance for the second complete game of his season, while shutting down one of the better offenses in the SCAC.
Â
Aleman allowed just four hits and struck out five, improving his record to 4-2 on the year. The nine innings of shutout baseball lowered his ERA to 1.76.
Â
With Aleman dealing, the Bulldogs used a three-run first inning to take a lead they would never relinquish.
Â
Those three runs were all unearned as the Bulldogs capitalized on a fielding miscue by Trinity. With one out,
Matt King drew a walk, then reached second after Connor Moore dropped Colin Serkowski's flip to him at second base.
Â
Justin Law followed that up with a one-out single to load the bases, before
Klaus Bohrmann (San Antonio, Texas) opened the scoring with a one-run single.
Zach Jacobs (Brenham, Texas) followed with a sacrifice fly that scored
Alejandro Gutierrez. With the inning supposed to be over if not for the error, the Bulldogs scored once more with a
Lincoln Baylor single up the middle.
Â
In the fifth, the Bulldogs would add to the lead with two more insurance runs. The damage was done by Law (Houston, Texas) and Bohrmann. Both players notched RBI singles.
Â
Law finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Bohrmann finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Â
The final run came in the eighth inning. This time it was
Holden Bryant who came around to score off a King RBI single. King (Barbers Hills, Texas) finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Â
The Bulldogs racked up nine hits and ran Trinity starter Trent Rape out of the game in the first inning. All of Rape's three runs were unearned.
Â
The second game did not go in quite the same fashion for TLU, although it did start in much the same way.
Â
The Bulldogs found themselves on top early again, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Both runs were scored after Bohrmann laced a double to deep left field.
Â
Bohrmann finished the second game 1-for-2 with those two RBI.
Â
Unfortunately, the pitching wasn't as dominant as it was in the first game.
Thomas Harwell (Humble, Texas) got the start on the mound and managed to get through the first two innings without allowing a run. He ran into trouble in the third though.
Â
The Tigers scored seven runs on six hits and a pair of walks in the inning, jumping out to a 7-2 lead. Harwell didn't make it out of the inning, his final line was two and 1/3 innings, with seven runs on seven hits with two walks.
Â
The Bulldog offense was silenced after the two-run first inning. Trinity starter Mike Walker allowed three hits in that first frame, then held the Bulldogs to just one more the rest of the way.
Â
Trinity scored five more runs in the sixth inning, expanding its lead to 12-2. The Bulldogs could not answer, or cut the lead to single-digits, so the 10-run rule after seven innings was enacted.
Â
The rubber match of the three-game set is slated for 7 p.m. tomorrow (Monday) under the lights at Katt-Isbel Field. Live video and live stats will be available via tlubulldogs.com.
