Baseball clinches series with 10-2 win over Trinity on Monday

SEGUIN â€" Texas Lutheran Baseball scored five runs in the third inning and powered its way to a 10-2 win over No. 12 Trinity on Monday night at Katt-Isbel Field.

The rubber-match winner gave the Bulldogs the series win against the Tigers, winning two out of the three games. Texas Lutheran moved to 15-8 overall and 4-2 in the SCAC, while Trinity dropped to 15-6 (3-3 SCAC).

On Monday, the Bulldogs busted out eight hits and took advantage of five errors by Trinity. Those errors played a big role in the five-run third inning.

With the score tied 1-1, Matt King led off the inning with a double. With one out and runners on the corners, Klaus Bohrmann hit into a fielder's choice, but a throwing error by the third baseman meant Justin Law was safe at second, as King scored.

Alejandro Gutierrez followed with an RBI single up the middle. Bohrmann came around to score on the play after another error by the Trinity third baseman Nick Jewett.

The Bulldogs scored another unearned run in the inning when Zach Jacobs hit a groundball back to the pitcher, but Zack Speer's underhand toss to first base was low and got by and into the outfield, scoring Gutierrez. The final run of the inning was scored on an Austin Frick double.

The Tigers scored a run in the fourth to make it 6-2.

Perhaps the biggest moment, aside from that third inning, came in the top of the fifth. Tyler Janota (Gonzales, Texas) came in from the bullpen with the bases loaded and one out. The first batter he faced was Jeremy Wolf, who lined out to Jacobs at shortstop. It was a leaping play by Jacobs to make the catch. Janota finished off the inning without allowing a run by striking out Drew Butler.

The Tigers never threatened like that the rest of the way. The Bulldogs put some distance between themselves and the Tigers in the bottom of the fifth when King (Barbers Hill, Texas) laced his second double of the night with the bases loaded, scoring three.

Janota came away with the win. He pitched one and 2/3 innings, giving up no runs and no hits.

King was the offensive star, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBI, one run and two doubles. In two games this series, King went 4-for-7 with four RBI and three runs.

Following Janota in the bullpen, Dylan Drgac (Caldwell, Texas) and Hunter Roberts (Montgomery, Texas) both tossed scoreless innings. Drgac went two innings and gave up just a walk, while striking out two. Roberts pitched the ninth inning, recording two strikeouts.

The Bulldogs will hit the road for their next SCAC series. They head to Irving, Texas and the University of Dallas for a three-game set. The two teams will start the series with a doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 28.
