Baseball splits Saturday doubleheader, takes SCAC-opening series vs. 'Roos

SEGUIN â€" Texas Lutheran's offense scored seven runs and busted out 12 hits, including two home runs, winning the first game of Saturday's home doubleheader against Austin College, before dropping the series finale 9-1.

The Bulldogs still managed to take the SCAC-opening series two games-to-one. They now own a 13-6 overall mark and a 2-1 record in the SCAC. Austin College moved to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the SCAC. It was just the second loss at home for TLU this season. They now own an 8-1 record at Katt-Isbel Field.

In Saturday's first game, six different Bulldogs drove in runs. Leading the offense was Tony Gennusa (Kingwood, Texas). The senior went 3-for-5 from the leadoff spot, scoring two runs and driving in one. He blasted his first home of the season in the 4th inning.

Klaus Bohrmann (San Antonio, Texas) was the other Bulldog who left the yard on Saturday. The senior cranked his second homer of the year, hitting a solo shot in the fifth inning to give the Bulldogs a 6-2 lead.

On the mound, Thomas Harwell gave the Bulldogs their second consecutive strong start. The senior from Humble, Texas) improved to 3-1, tossing six innings and giving up just two runs. He worked around eight hits and a pair of walks, striking out two.

The 'Roos left 11 runners on base for the second straight game.

Texas Lutheran got the scoring going early, jumping out in front 2-0 in the first inning. Gennusa scored after Riley Schaeffer (Thorndale, Texas) ripped a double. Schaeffer scored later on a Keaton Bohrmann (San Antonio, Texas) single. Bohrmann finished 2-for-4.

TLU built upon their lead in the third inning, scoring two more runs. Matt King (Barbers Hill, Texas) drove in what turned out to be the winning run with a triple to right center.

Austin College scored twice in the fifth inning, but the Bulldogs answered quickly, scoring two more in the bottom of the frame to build their lead to 7-2.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the offense would stumble in the series finale. TLU was held to one run on seven hits, as Austin College got a complete-game effort from Brett Moody.

King was the only Bulldog to notch more than one hit in the game. The senior went 2-for-4.

While the offense struggled to find its footing, the TLU pitching also struggled in final game. Hunter Roberts (Montgomery, Texas) got his first career start and took the loss. The freshman got through two and 1/3 innings and ended up giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits and a pair of walks. He also hit a batter and had a wild pitch.

The freshman ran into trouble in the first, but did a good job of working out of a jam. After the 'Roos started the game by putting runners on second and third, Roberts coaxed a double-play ball to limit the damage to just one run.

It looked like he would settle down after getting through the second without allowing a run, but he gave up four runs in the third.

Aaron Milone (Houston, Texas) came in for Roberts in the third. He tossed two innings, giving up two runs on two hits and three walks.

Lincoln Baylor (Schertz, Texas) gave up two unearned runs, while Dylan Drgac and Tyler Janota tossed a combined three innings without allowing a run.

The Bulldogs take a break from conference play this week when they play host to Texas Wesleyan in a doubleheader starting at noon Tuesday, March 17. Live video and live stats will be available via tlubulldogs.com.
