Sixth-ranked UT Tyler delivers 3-1, 13-4 defeats to TLU Softball

TYLER, Texas â€" Texas Lutheran Softball recorded 3-1 and 13-4 defeats Sunday to No. 6-ranked University of Texas at Tyler at Suddenlink Field.

UT Tyler won both ends of its season-opening doubleheader and exacted a little bit of revenge on the Bulldogs, who defeated the Patriots 2-1 in the 2014 NCAA Softball Championship regional pod in Tyler.

TLU dropped to 1-3 overall at the start of the 2015 campaign. The Bulldogs split a doubleheader Saturday in Tyler against Louisiana College.

The Patriots belted four home runs against the Bulldogs on Sunday. UT Tyler junior shortstop Raven Rodriguez went 5-for-6 with four RBI on the day.

Rodriguez hit a two-run home run in the third inning of the first game. In game two, she delivered three singles and two RBI.

UT Tyler's top three batters in its lineup went a combined 8-for-12 with nine RBI in the second game, which ended after five innings due to the run rule.

Vanessa Carrizales ended the late game in the fifth with a two-run shot to center field.

TLU jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game two but could not hold off the Patriots, who scored five runs in the second and six runs in the third.

Nicole Snow (Tomball/Klein Oak) hit a two-run home run for TLU in that four-run first. Snow's homer was one of four Bulldog hits in the late game.

TLU out-hit UT-Tyler in the first game, 5-4, but could produce only an RBI groundout from Lainey Hebert in the sixth.

The Bulldogs do not play again until a Feb. 17 home doubleheader against Concordia Texas. Start time for the home-opener at Ed Kruse Stadium â€" Morck Softball Field is 5 p.m.
