Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hot shooting, late run help Women's Hoops to crucial win over Schreiner

SEGUIN â€" Texas Lutheran Women's Basketball used a season-best shooting performance, and outscored Schreiner 17-4 in the final 5:45 to secure an 82-67 win over the Mountaineers on Friday, extending its winning streak to four.

The Bulldogs shot a season-high 52 percent from the field and knocked down nearly 54 percent (7-of-13) of their shots from long range.

The Bulldog offense has averaged 88 points per game over this four-game winning streak, shooting better than 46 percent from the field and nearly 42 percent from deep.

The win improved TLU's record to 12-8 overall and 7-3 in the SCAC. After Friday's results around the league, the Bulldogs sit tied with Schreiner for third, although they own the tiebreaker over the Mountaineers courtesy of the season-series sweep. TLU trails both Trinity and Southwestern by just one game for the conference lead, with games against both schools still remaining on the schedule.

On Friday, it looked like the Bulldogs would cruise to a relatively easy win after building a 12-point lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in the contest. Schreiner had other ideas though, quickly closing the gap back to within two with 5:45 to play.

Kristen Lye (San Antonio, Texas) scored a layup on the Bulldogs' next possession, then Savannah Hight (San Antonio, Texas) followed that up with a 3-pointer to stretch the Bulldog advantage back out to seven. The Bulldog defense tightened up too, holding Schreiner to just one made field goal the rest of the way.

Taylor Dydalewicz (Dripping Springs, Texas) led the Bulldogs with 27 points and, for the second straight game, finished just one rebound shy of a double-double. The junior relentlessly got to the free throw line, making 16-of-17 from the stripe. She scored 18 of her 27 points in the second half.

Three other Bulldogs finished in double figures. Lye scored 11 and racked up the double-double, pulling down 10 rebounds on the night.

Hight added 10 points of her own, finishing a perfect 2-of-2 from behind the arc. Natalie Vella (Corpus Christi, Texas) scored a season-high 10 points, making 2-of-4 from three-point land.

It took nearly a minute and a half for either team to get into the scoring column to start the game. Vella opened things up with a 3-pointer. The first 10 minutes of action were back-and-forth, and the score was tied 15-15 midway through the first half.

Texas Lutheran used a 15-6 spurt to open up a nine-point advantage with under seven minutes to play in the half. Five different Bulldogs scored during that run.

Schreiner promptly battled back to tie things back up, answering the TLU run with a 9-1 run of its own. The Bulldogs would eventually build another seven-point advantage, but Schreiner scored the final four points of the half and TLU went to the locker room ahead 38-35.

Texas Lutheran didn't waste much time opening its lead back up to start the second half, using a 9-0 run to retake a double-digit advantage. The run was keyed by seven points from Dydalewicz.

The huge weekend continues at 4 p.m. tomorrow when the Bulldogs host Trinity. If TLU defeats the Tigers tomorrow, and Schreiner beats Southwestern, there will be a four-way tie for first place in the league standings. You can catch the action tomorrow via live video at tlubulldogs.com.
