Early offense powers Baseball to opening-night win over Whittier

SEGUIN â€" The Texas Lutheran baseball squad opened up its season with a bang, scoring nine runs in the first two innings of 2015 on its way to a 12-1 season-opening win over Whittier College on Friday night under the lights at Katt-Isbel Field.

Four of those nine runs were driven in by Lincoln Baylor (Schertz, Texas). His bases-clearing, three-run triple in the first inning gave the Bulldogs their first lead, at 4-1. He followed that up with a sacrifice fly in the next inning for TLU's ninth run.

He wrapped up his fantastic opening night with an RBI single in the fourth to make it 10-1. Baylor, a junior, finished 2-for-2 with five RBI and a walk.

Texas Lutheran improved to 1-0 with the win, while Whittier, after dropping a pair of contests on Friday, fell to 0-2.

The Bulldogs actually fell behind in the first inning when Whittier capitalized on a fielding miscue, scoring after an error by Justin Law at first base.

It was all TLU after that though. The first Bulldog run was driven in by Klaus Bohrmann (San Antonio, Texas) after reaching on a fielding error. Baylor's triple finished off the damage in the first inning, with the Bulldogs ahead 4-1.

The first five TLU batters all reached base in the second inning, setting up a five-run frame. Alejandro Gutierrez (Pharr, Texas) keyed the big inning with a two-run single. Five of the first nine runs TLU scored were unearned, as the Bulldogs did a good job of taking advantage of some Whittier miscues.

While the offense was impressive on its way to 12 runs on 15 hits, the Bulldogs also received a quality opening-day start from Aaron Aleman (Corpus Christi, Texas). The senior tossed six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on just two hits. He struck out a career-high 10 and gave up five walks during his outing.

Three other Bulldogs besides Baylor racked up at least two hits on the night. Leading the way was Zach Jacobs (Brenham, Texas), who finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Justin Law (Houston, Texas) went 2-for-3 in his Texas Lutheran debut, scoring two runs, driving in one and notching a walk.

Holden Bryant (Kingwood, Texas) was the other Bulldog to tally a multi-hit night. He went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Three Bulldogs tossed the final three innings after Aleman departed. Derek Cantu, Logan Domino and Stephen Greenlees all made their TLU debuts and pitched an inning each. All three gave up one hit.

Texas Lutheran and Whittier will meet right back up tomorrow at 11 for a rematch in the second day of the TLU/Trinity Tournament. The Bulldogs will wrap up the weekend with a 7 p.m. showdown against Texas-Tyler. Live video and live stats of all of tomorrow's action can be found at tlubulldogs.com.
