TLU Men's Basketball improves to 6-1 with 81-71 road win at UMHB



BELTON, Texas -- Saturday in the Mayborn Campus Center, Texas Lutheran Men's Basketball registered its first road win at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor since the 2003-04 season with an 81-71 victory over the Cru.

TLU improved to 6-1 overall with its fifth consecutive victory of the 2015-16 season. UMHB dropped to 2-2 overall.

TLU's 6-1 start is the Bulldogs' best start through seven games in its NCAA DIII era, which began in the 2002-03 season.

Saturday's win for TLU was the Bulldogs' first in Belton over UMHB since a 73-70 victory on Jan. 24, 2004.

TLU Head Coach Jimmy Smith has witnessed the last two TLU victories . He was a player for UMHB in TLU's last win in Belton.

Saturday's TLU victory snapped a nine-game road losing streak against the Cru.

The Bulldogs led 36-33 at the half but quickly stretched the lead to 16 with a 23-10 run at the start of the second period.

Zach Behr (Temple/Temple) hit a pair of three-pointers and scored 10 points in the run. Behr finished with 15 points and two rebounds.

Jordan Kouremetis (San Antonio/O'Connor) led the Bulldogs with 18 points. He hit four three-pointers. Blake Ray (Kerrville/Tivy) added 10 points, two rebounds and two steals.

Sterling Holmes, TLU's junior point guard, finished two points and an assist shy of a triple-double. Holmes (San Antonio/Antonian) collected 10 rebounds, eight points and nine assists.

The Bulldogs made 45.5 percent of their total shots and went 7-for-11 from the three-point line in the second half.

TLU made 11 of its 27 total three-point shots. UMHB went 2-for-17 from the three-point line and shot 30.9 percent from the field for the game.

The Bulldog committed only eight turnovers in the contest.

TLU does not play again until Dec. 19 (against Illinois Wesleyan) and Dec. 20 (Alma) when the Bulldogs compete in the Trinity Holiday Basketball Classic in San Antonio.
