SAN ANTONIO --
Jordan Kouremetis (San Antonio/O'Connor) hit a game-winning jumper with nine seconds to play to lift No. 25 Texas Lutheran to an 82-81 come-from-behind victory over Alma College (Mich.) on Sunday afternoon.
At Trinity University's Sams Gymnasium, Kouremetis' shot capped a furious TLU comeback. The Bulldogs trailed by 12 points early in the second half and by 11 with 7:39 remaining.
After Kouremetis' final bucket and an Alma timeout, the Bulldogs forced a long, contested shot from the Scots with a second to play. The ball glanced off the side of the rim as the horn sounded.
TLU took its first lead of the second half with a
Michael Sullivan (Frisco/Wakeland) three-pointer with 3:11 to play. The lead changed four times in the final 2:44.
Sullivan's three gave TLU its first lead since the 12:08 mark of the first half.
Bulldog point guard
Sterling Holmes (San Antonio/Antonian) put TLU in front by one with 2:21 to play. Holmes then converted a three-point play that brought TLU within one with 1:16 remaining.
Holmes led all scorers with 23 points. He added eight rebounds and five assists. Kouremetis chipped in 13, and
Zach Behr (Temple/Temple) scored 17.
Behr blocked Scott Nikodemski's jumper with 27 seconds remaining, and
Aris Qadash Williams (Helena, Alab./Pelham) grabbed the defensive rebound to set up the final Bulldog offensive possession.
DJ Beckman scored 21 for the Scots, and Nikodemski recorded 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
TLU improved to 7-2 overall. Alma dropped to 5-4. Both schools are members of the NCAA Division III.
TLU finished the Trinity University Holiday Classic with a 1-1 record. The Bulldogs fell 92-86 Saturday against Illinois Wesleyan.
The Bulldogs now travel to Beaumont, Texas for Monday's exhibition game against NCAA Division I Lamar University. (The game counts as a regular-season game for Lamar.) Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Lamar's Montagne Center.
