Concordia Texas prevails in 2OT against Texas Lutheran, 98-91

SEGUIN, Texas -- Concordia Texas overcame a 13-point first half deficit and survived a couple of late Texas Lutheran comebacks - one at the end of regulation and another at the end of the first overtime - to defeat the Bulldogs 98-91 in double overtime Saturday afternoon.

In TLU's Memorial Gymnasium, the Bulldogs' junior forward Savannah Hight (San Antonio/Brandeis) poured in a career-best 32 points and added nine rebounds. She made 14 of her 20 shot attempts and had two assists and a steal.

Isis Johnson and Jaela Dejean scored 30 and 26 for the Tornados, who improved to 1-1 overall with the non-conference win. Johnson pulled down 12 rebounds. TLU dropped to 1-1 overall.

The Bulldogs trailed 69-63 with 1:55 to play in regulation, but Hight scored the final six points of the fourth quarter to force overtime. She made two free throws, a jumper and then a layup. Hight's final points, the layup off an offensive rebound, came with about 12 seconds to play in regulation.

With TLU trailing by three in the closing seconds of the first overtime, senior post Autumn Shead (Pflugerville/Connally) hit her first collegiate three-pointer. Shead had yet to attempt a three-pointer in her four-year career at TLU, but she drained the three when left wide-open and forced the second OT.

Shead was the only player off the Bulldog bench to score. She scored 10 and had five rebounds, an assist and a block.

TLU senior forward Taylor Dydalewicz (Dripping Springs/Lake Travis) finished with 18 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior point guard Bailey Champion (San Antonio/Reagan) scored 12 and grabbed six rebounds. She also had two assists and two steals.

TLU starters Kristen Lye (San Antonio/Clark) and Adelaide Wenzel (Victoria/Victoria East) fouled out in the first overtime. Wenzel scored 15 and had four rebounds, five assists and three steals. Lye grabbed five rebounds and scored four.

Concordia's Emily Cullers moved the Tornado lead to five, at 94-89, with a second-OT three-pointer. She hit a jumper on the next CTX possession to push the lead to seven with 34 seconds to play.

The Bulldogs hit 63.3 percent of their first-half shots but cooled down to 34.5 percent in the second half.

Concordia made just 36.4 percent of its shots in the first half but made 10-of-15 shots (66.7 percent) in the two overtime sessions.
