KERRVILLE, Texas â€" The Texas Lutheran women's soccer team won its second straight game and opened its SCAC season with a 2-0 shutout on the road against Schreiner on Saturday.
Â
The two teams were supposed to meet on Friday, but rain and inclement weather postponed the game until Saturday. The win improved the Bulldogs' record to 2-3 on the year and 1-0 in SCAC play. The loss dropped Schreiner to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in conference competition.
Â
It was a pair of freshman who powered the offense for TLU against the Mountaineers. Both
Meredith Jamail and
Zoe Gulick scored the first goals of their TLU careers on Saturday.
Â
The defense was also outstanding, holding Schreiner without a shot the entire game.
Â
Jamail (Spring, Texas) got the Bulldogs on the board first with a goal in the 34th minute. The score came off a corner-kick set piece.
Tara Armstrong (Lincoln, Calif.) was credited with the assist after lifting the corner kick into the box.
Â
The score remained 1-0 for the remainder of the first half and for the first 15 minutes of the second half. Gulick (New Braunfels, Texas) quickly changed that though, doubling the Bulldogs' lead in the 61st minute with her first goal as a Bulldog.
Â
Saturday's win was the first shutout of the 2014 season for the Bulldogs. Sophomore
Erin Rose (San Antonio, Texas), who tied for the conference lead with five shutouts last year, tallied the clean sheet without having to make a save against the Mountaineers.
Â
It was a defensive game for both teams, with the Bulldogs only tallying three shots total, with two shots on goal.
Â
The Bulldogs will be back in action tomorrow in a non-conference road tilt against Huston-Tillotson at 3 p.m. The game will be played at the University of Texas Whitaker Intramural Field No. 7.
