BELTON, Texas â€" A goal off a corner-kick with less than 20 minutes to play was the only goal allowed by the Texas Lutheran women's soccer team, but that one goal proved to be the difference in the Bulldogs' 1-0 season-opening loss on the road to Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday night.
Â
The game's only score came in the 72nd minute when the Cru worked to get a corner kick. Off the set piece, Briana Hester got on the end of a Sarah Kopp cross, heading the ball past sophomore keeper
Erin Rose.
Â
The goal, which proved to be the end of Rose's night after being subbed prior to the resumption of play, was the fly in the ointment of a productive evening. The sophomore from San Antonio made 11 saves before giving up that late goal, keeping the game scoreless and the Bulldogs in the contest. Those 11 saves are the second-most in her young career.
Â
Her effort in the first half was particularly impressive, as she kept out a deluge of UMHB offerings, making nine saves in the game's opening 45 minutes.
Â
The game-winning goal was scored while Mary Hardin-Baylor was playing with 10 players. The Cru's Allison Porter was ejected less than 10 minutes prior to Hester's game winner.
Â
The Bulldogs had a bit of difficulty trying to break down the Cru defense, managing one shot on goal for the game. That shot came courtesy of
Sioned Kirkpatrick (San Antonio, Texas) in the 38th minute.
Â
The Bulldogs will be on the hunt for their first win of the season when they come back home for a Labor Day battle Monday, Sept. 1 against Concordia Texas at 1 p.m. at Gustafson Field. Live video and live stats will be available via tlubulldogs.com.
