SAN ANTONIO -- In the winners bracket game of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Championship, Texas Lutheran Baseball scored seven combined runs in the eighth and ninth innings to erase a 7-0 deficit before the Trinity Tigers rallied in the ninth for a walk-off win.
Saturday at Trinity Baseball Field, Pat Hirschberg's RBI single in the ninth gave Trinity the 8-7 win and sent the Tigers to the championship round of the conference tournament. Trinity will play at noon Sunday for the conference title and the automatic NCAA Division III berth.
TLU must turn around and play at 7 p.m. tonight against the winner of Centenary (La.) and Southwestern. The Bulldogs need a win tonight to advance to the championship round for a re-match with Trinity. The Tigers would need to lose twice on Sunday for another team to claim the conference crown.
The Bulldogs started the comeback in the eighth with a four-run frame that included a
Christian DeBlanc (Kingwood/Kingwood) RBI single, a two-RBI single from
Keaton Bohrmann (San Antonio/Johnson), and a
Derek Kanas (New Braunfels/Canyon) RBI sacrifice fly.
The TLU rally continued in the ninth with DeBlanc reaching on a error to score a run and Bohrmann doubling home two runs with a blast to center field with two outs.
Bohrmann advanced to third on an error to give the Bulldogs the go-ahead run 90 feet from home plate. The next TLU batter, Kanas, sent a well-hit line drive to center field that Hirschberg snagged for the third out.
In the bottom of the ninth with two outs, Hirschberg delivered a
Thomas Harwell (Houston/Atascocita) pitch deep into right field, out of the diving reach of right-fielder
Von Wendel (Austin/Anderson). The winning run was unearned because of TLU fielding error earlier in the inning.
Bohrmann drove in four runs for the Bulldogs and now has eight RBI in his two SCAC tournament games.
The Bulldogs have scored 12 runs in the eighth inning in the tournament.
Bohrmann, DeBlanc, Wendel and
Zach Jacobs (Brenham/Brenham) each collected a pair of hits, and DeBlanc and Jacobs each scored twice.
TLU dropped to 26-16 overall with the loss. Trinity, ranked in the Top 15 in two national polls, improved to 32-8.
