KERRVILLE, Texas â€" The Texas Lutheran softball team outscored Schreiner 37-9 in a doubleheader sweep at Mountaineer Field on Friday night.
Â
The Bulldogs beat the Mountaineers 14-2 in the first game and 23-7 in the second. The pair of wins improved TLU's record to 23-7 on the year and 15-1 in the SCAC. With the two wins and a Trinity loss, the Bulldogs need to win just two more conference games to clinch at least a share of the regular season title and earn the right to host the SCAC Championship.
Â
The 23 runs TLU scored in the second game was the most the Bulldogs have scored since a 26-1 win over Concordia in 1997. Those 23 runs are the fifth-most scored in a single game in school history.
Â
The scoring really started in the first game, though. TLU was locked in a tight battle with the Mountaineers, clinging to a 4-2 advantage heading into the final inning after Schreiner had scored two in the sixth to cut the lead in half. That's when the Bulldog offense sprung to life, scoring 10 runs on nine hits in the frame to blow the game wide open. TLU racked up four doubles in that inning with
Taylor Yancey twice driving in runs with hits.
Â
The Bulldogs finished that game with 16 hits. Four of those went to
Molly Gorrie (Houston, Texas). The senior outfielder finished a perfect 4-for-4 in the game, scoring a career-high four runs in the process. Of course, there needed to be somebody to drive in Gorrie after she got on base four times. That responsibility fell to Yancey (Magnolia, Texas) and
Jacquelyn Brown (Vidor, Texas). Both players finished with four RBI.
Â
Brown went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Yancey finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored.
Â
Taylor Grissom (Spring, Texas) was the winning pitcher in game one, improving to 6-2 on the year with a five 2/3-inning effort. She gave up two runs on six hits while striking out one.
Samantha Yenne and
Amanda Lochte combined to finish the game off in the circle for TLU.
Â
The Bulldogs kept the good times rolling in the second game, scoring all 23 of their runs in the first four innings and, combined with the 10 runs scored in the last inning of the first game, scored 33 runs in a five-inning span.
Â
The Bulldogs scored those 23 runs on 23 hits, including six extra-base hits. Leading the way in the offensive onslaught was Yancey and
Ashley Jacobsen (Marion, Texas). The two combined to go 9-for-9 with 11 RBI, eight runs and four extra-base hits.
Â
Yancey drove in a career-high six RBI, finishing 4-for-4 on the night. She drove in the first two runs of the game on a two-run double, but the rest of the RBI came on one mighty swing of the bat. She hammered a grand slam in the fourth inning that gave the Bulldogs a 19-3 lead. The grand slam was part of a nine-run fourth.
Â
Jacobsen was not to be outdone, finishing 5-for-5 with five RBI and a double to go along with four runs. She drove in a run in the first that capped off an eight-run first inning. She also drove in two more with a single in the second before driving in her last two runs on an RBI single in the fourth.
Â
Gorrie continued her strong night, finishing 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two walks. She finished the doubleheader 6-for-6 with seven runs, three RBI and two walks. She reached base all eight times she stepped to the plate in the two games.
Â
Kimberly Leschber (Thorndale, Texas) earned the win for the Bulldogs, improving to 7-2 on the year. She tossed the first two innings, giving up two runs on three hits.
Veny Pizana pitched two innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits, while
Elyse Hlavinka finished the game off with a shutout inning.
Â
The Bulldogs and Mountaineers will match back up again for a noon doubleheader tomorrow (Saturday) in Kerrville.
