Trinity's 5-2, 9-3 wins over Texas Lutheran complete baseball series sweep

SAN ANTONIO -- Top 10-ranked Trinity secured 5-2 and 9-3 wins Saturday over Texas Lutheran to complete a three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference sweep of the Bulldogs.

In the first-ever conference games between the two longtime area baseball rivals, Trinity out-scored TLU 18-5 over the three-game series. The Tigers won the series opener 4-0 on Friday night. All three games were played at the Trinity Baseball Field.

In the early game Saturday, TLU jumped out a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single from Christian DeBlanc (Kingwood/Kingwood). The single scored Tony Gennusa (Kingwood/Kingwood), who led off the game with a double to right field.

Trinity took control of the game with a run in the first, a run in the second and three runs in the fourth. Two of the runs in the fourth were unearned due to a TLU error.

The Bulldogs' only other run of the early game came on a Keaton Bohrmann (San Antonio/Johnson) home run in the sixth.

Zack Speer went the distance in the seven-inning game. He struck out two, scattered six hits and improved to 7-1 with the win.

In the late game, Trinity scored in every inning but the fourth. The Tigers held a 3-0 lead after two innings before TLU scored three in the top of the third.

In the three-run third, TLU scored on an RBI single from Keaton Bohrmann and bases-loaded walks from DeBlanc and Klaus Bohrmann (San Antonio/Johnson). The Bulldogs managed just two singles the rest of the way.

Carter Lauck (2-1) picked up the win in relief. He tossed 4-2/3 innings, struck out four and allowed two hits.

Drew Butler and Chris Bianchi each hit homers for Trinity in the second game.

Trinity improved to 28-6 overall and to 14-1 in the SCAC. The Tigers clinched the top seed for the SCAC Tournament and the tournament-hosting duties that come with claiming the top seed.

TLU dropped to 22-14 overall and to 9-6 in the SCAC.

The Bulldogs' next game is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at TLU's Katt-Isbel Field against the University of Houston at Victoria. TLU will have live video and stats for the non-conference game on tlubulldogs.com.
