Von Wendel walk-off as Bulldogs take SCAC series 2-1 over Dallas

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran senior Von Wendel (Austin/Anderson) recorded his second walk-off single in four games in lifting the Bulldogs to a wild 7-6 victory in the SCAC series finale with University of Dallas.

The Bulldogs (13-6, 2-1 SCAC) ralled for four runs in the eighth inning of the scheduled seven-inning contest and were twice down to their last strike against the Crusaders (10-8, 1-2 SCAC).

At TLU's Katt-Isbel Field, Dallas won the early game Sunday 4-3 and appeared ready to sweep the doubleheader from the Bulldogs with a 6-3 lead entering the eighth.

Dallas trailed 3-0 into the sixth but put itself in position to win by scoring three runs in the sixth and three more in the eighth.

In the Bulldog half of the eighth, Derek Kanas (New Braunfels/Canyon) secured a lead-off walk, and Keaton and Klaus Bohrmann (San Antonio/Johnson) followed with singles to load the bases with no outs.

Pinch-hitter Matt King (Barbers Hill/Barbers Hill) then drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI fielder's choice. After his RBI, King was picked off between first and second, but Keaton Bohrmann came home as King was being tagged. The Bohrmann run cut the deficit to 6-5.

After Ryan Hill (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) walked and Holden Bryant (Bullard/Bullard) entered as the pinch runner, Mason Briscoe (Needville/Needville) singled to left in front of a Tony Gennusa (Kingwood/Kingwood) walk that loaded the bases for Wendel.

Wendel took a Trevor Keele pitch deep into the right-center field gap to easily score Bryant from third and Briscoe from second. The Bulldogs mobbed Wendel between first and second to celebrate the win.

Wendel's walk-off single on Wednesday defeated DeSales (Pa.) 7-6 in the 11th inning.

The victory gave TLU two of the three Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series wins against Dallas. All three games in the series were decided by one run. TLU captured Saturday's game 8-7, and Dallas won 4-3 in the early game Sunday.

In the first game Sunday, Dallas freshman right-hander Evan Eubanks took a no-hitter and a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning. (The first game of the day was scheduled for seven innings before TLU rallied to make the early game the nine-inning contest).

Eubanks retired the first batter of the seventh before allowing three consecutive doubles (to Kanas and to Keaton and Klaus Bohrmann) that tied the game at 2-2.

With the shutout and the no-hitter now history, Eubanks gave way to Keele, who worked the final 2-2/3 innings and picked up the win. Dallas scored two runs in the ninth and held off a TLU rally in the bottom of the frame.

Keele, with his win in game one and loss in game two, moved to 1-1 on the year.

Conner Capdau (Sugar Land/Lamar Consolidated) kept the Bulldogs close in game two and notched the win. Capdau struck out two batters in the ninth with the bases loaded to keep the Bulldogs' deficit at 6-3.

Kanas, Keaton Bohrmann and Alejandro Gutierrez (Pharr/PSJA North) each had two hits for the Bulldogs in the late game. Kanas and Bohrmann each scored a pair of runs.

TLU continues SCAC play next weekend with a three-game series in Sherman, Texas against Austin College. Friday's game is set for a 2 p.m. start, and Saturday's doubleheader begins at noon.
