TLU Baseball completes doubleheader sweep of nationally-ranked UT Tyler

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran completed a doubleheader sweep of nationally-ranked University of Texas at Tyler with 4-1 and 6-5 wins Saturday at TLU's Katt-Isbel Field.

TLU finished off a 3-0 weekend that included a 9-1 win over Chapman (Calif.) on Friday and the two wins Saturday against UT Tyler (0-2). The Patriots received preseason rankings of No. 11 from Collegiate Baseball Magazine and No. 14 from D3baseball.com.

In the early game Saturday, TLU senior right-hander Dwayne Snider took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and came within a batter of tossing a one-hit shutout. Snider (1-0) settled for 6-2/3 innings pitched with six strikeouts, four walks and two hits.

Thomas Harwell (Houston/Atascocita) retired the final batter with runners at the corners and the tying run at the plate. He picked up his first collegiate save.

Tony Gennusa (Kingwood/Kingwood) doubled, stole two bases, scored a run and collected three hits. Christian DeBlanc (Kingwood/Kingwood) knocked in a pair of runs, and Zach Jacobs (Brenham/Brenham) added an RBI groundout.

Gunner Baker took the loss for the Patriots in the early game. He went 3-2/3 innings and allowed three earned runs. He walked five and struck out one.

In the late game, in a back-and-forth affair with two lead changes and two ties, TLU's Klaus Bohrmann (San Antonio/Johnson) broke a 5-5 tie in the seventh with a solo home run to left field. Bohrmann was one of four Bulldogs to have at least two hits in the late game.

Gennusa and DeBlanc each drove in a pair of runs, and Mason Briscoe (Needville/Needville) scored two runs.

Senior left-hander Blake Balazs (Austin/Westwood) pitched three innings of one-hit relief and struck out three batters to pick up the win.

Brett Clark (Vancouver, B.C./Semiahmoo Secondary) retired the final two batters in the ninth to collect his first career save. Clark allowed a double to the first batter he faced, but he secured the final two outs on a fly-ball to center and a ground-out to third.

Lefty sidearm pitcher Ryan Welch (Magnolia/Magnolia) retired UT Tyler slugger Kevan House on a ground-out to third to start the ninth.

Joshua Holley (0-1) registered the loss in relief for the Patriots. Second baseman Reid Coover went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.

TLU continues its non-conference schedule with a 2 p.m. home game Tuesday against former conference foe Concordia Texas. TLU, now a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, played in the American Southwest Conference with Concordia Texas from 2001 to 2013. Before the ASC, Concordia and TLU played together in the Heart of Texas Conference. TLU will have live video and stats for the single, 9-inning game on tlubulldogs.com.
