TLU Women rally from 21-down, defeat Trinity 74-72 for sole possesion of SCAC lead



SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs rallied from 21 points down in the first half, took their first lead of the game with 1:12 to play, and out-scored Trinity 45-28 in the second half to secure a 74-72 conference win over the Tigers.

Friday night in TLU's Memorial Gymnasium, the Bulldogs moved into sole possession of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball lead. TLU won its 10th straight game and improved to 18-5 overall and to 10-2 in the SCAC. The 18 wins are the second-most ever in a TLU Women's Basketball season.

Trinity dropped to 17-6 overall and to 9-3 in the SCAC. TLU and Trinity split the regular-season meetings, with each team winning at home.

TLU fell behind 13-0 and 21-3 as Trinity hit seven of their 12 three-pointers and shot 48.5 percent from the field in the first half. TLU made just 10-of-32 shots in the first half.

The Bulldogs finished the final 10 minutes of the game on a 26-11 run and a closed the final 5:24 on a 10-0 run.

TLU junior point guard Karisa Cantu (San Antonio/MacArthur) nailed a three with 2:01 to play to bring TLU within one, 72-71.

Bulldog freshman Savannah Hight (San Antonio/Brandeis) put her team ahead for the first time, at 73-72, with a eight-foot jumper with 1:12 on the clock.

After TLU hit a free throw - by Hight - Trinity missed a pair of three-point attempts in the closing seconds. Lauren Splawn's three-pointer at the buzzer did not hit the rim.

Cantu led TLU with 17 points, three rebounds and three assists. Hight and Lye scored 15 and 14 points, respectively. Hight and Lye each grabbed six rebounds. Taylor Dydalewicz (Dripping Springs/Lake Travis) led TLU with eight rebounds. She added six points.

Cantu made five of her six three-point attempts. TLU hit six of 11 three-pointers in the second half and 10 of 22 threes overall.

The Bulldogs must turn right around and face another SCAC leader, Southwestern, a winner Friday night in Kerrville, Texas against Schreiner. Southwestern brings a 13-10 overall record and a 9-3 SCAC record into Memorial Gymnasium.

Southwestern defeated TLU 92-82 in Georgetown, Texas on Jan. 11.
