SEGUIN â€" Texas Lutheran shot better than 50 percent in the second half, outscoring Manchester 48-28 en route to a 73-53 home win over the Spartans on Thursday.
Â
After struggling from the field in the first half, especially from deep, the Bulldogs scorched the nets in the second period. They finished 4-of-6 from long range in the half.
Â
They were led by a familiar pair of sophomores, in
Kristen Lye and
Savannah Hight. Lye (San Antonio, Texas) scored a game-high 18 points, one shy of her season high, on 6-of-10 shooting, also tallying eight rebounds and three assists in the contest. Hight (San Antonio, Texas) added 12 points of her own on 5-of-8 shooting.
Â
The win snapped a three-game skid for the Bulldogs, improving their record to 3-4. Manchester dropped to 3-4 with the loss.
Â
The second half of Thursday's game was maybe the best the Bulldogs' offense has looked this season. TLU finished the game with 41 percent shooting, the best mark it's had all year. The Bulldogs' 35 percent three-point shooting was also a season high.
Â
Taylor Dydalewicz (Dripping Springs, Texas) joined Lye and Hight as the Bulldogs' other double-figure scorer. The junior added 16 points to go along with six rebounds.
Â
Improved ball improvement and a drop in turnovers played a huge role in the Bulldogs' hot-shooting day. For the first time this season, they recorded more assists (15) than turnovers (11), while also recording a season low in the latter category.
Â
After the first half, it looked like Texas Lutheran would be in for a dogfight as it trailed for much of the opening 20 minutes. TLU was held to 31 percent from the field in the first half and trailed by as many as eight with five minutes to go. It closed the half on an 8-0 run to tie the game.
Â
The Bulldogs continued that success in the second half, quickly opening up a 36-30 lead less than five minutes into second-half play.
Â
They never looked back after that, expanding their lead to double digits with 12:20 to play and never trailing by less than seven again.
Â
Chelsey Stolle (Falls City, Texas) scored a season-high six points, while providing her usual defense in the post with three blocks and eight rebounds.
Â
The Bulldogs have a quick turnaround, as they head out on the road to take on Hendrix College at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20. Live video and live stats will be available via tlubulldogs.com.
