SAN ANTONIO â€" Championship Sunday is on the schedule for Texas Lutheran Women's Soccer after an exciting 1-0 win over the University of Dallas in the semifinals of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday.
Â
The Bulldogs (10-8-1, 8-4 SCAC) will take on the tournament's top seed, No. 3-ranked Trinity, at 1 p.m. tomorrow in San Antonio. The winner will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament. If you believe in momentum, the Bulldogs shouldn't be lacking in it as they head into the final. They've now won six of their last seven games.
Â
Maegan Idrogo (McAllen, Texas) provided the game winner, punching in a second-half goal in the 74th minute to give the Bulldogs all the offense they would need. The goal came off a corner kick from
Sioned Kirkpatrick (San Antonio, Texas) that ended up at the feet of
Zoe Gulick (New Braunfels, Texas). Her shot was saved, but the rebound found Idrogo, who squeezed a shot into the back of the net. It was Idrogo's third goal of the season. Both Kirkpatrick and Gulick were credited with assists.
Â
Idrogo's goal was a well-deserved result after Texas Lutheran controlled play for much of the second half, dominating possession and often keeping Dallas pinned in its own side of the field. There were a number of chances before the goal, including a header from Kirkpatrick that went wide off a free kick into the box. The Bulldogs out-shot the Crusaders eight to six in the second half, notching three shots on goal.
Â
For the game, the Crusaders held the narrow advantage in shots, finishing with 15 compared to 12 for the Bulldogs. Kirkpatrick led the team with four shots and two shots on goal.
Vanessa Espinoza (San Antonio, Texas) and
Kelly Lochte (New Braunfels, Texas) each tallied two shots.
Â
TLU keeper
Erin Rose (San Antonio, Texas) was solid in net, making seven saves on her way to her sixth shutout of the season. Four of those saves came in the second half.
Â
The first half was played more in Texas Lutheran's half of the field, with the Bulldogs being out-shot 9-4 in the opening 45 minutes. Rose made three saves in the first half to keep Dallas off the scoreboard.
Â
The Bulldogs did have their chances though, with three of their four shots coming on target. The best chance for TLU in the first half came late, when Kirkpatrick broke through the defense to take a shot at the top of the box. The shot took a dangerous deflection, but was kept out of the net by a diving Elena Naccari.
