Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Dydalewicz's career night not enough in overtime loss to UMHB

BELTON, Texas â€" Taylor Dydalewicz scored a career-high 36 points and Texas Lutheran battled back from numerous deficits to force overtime, but eventually fell 91-89 in overtime against Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday night.

The final minute of overtime was one of the wackiest sequences you'll see on a basketball court, and it almost ended in an improbable Bulldog comeback.

The Bulldogs found themselves down 91-80 with 1:03 left. Dydalewicz (Dripping Springs, Texas) knocked down a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws, sandwiching those two plays around a UMHB turnover to cut it to 91-85 with 38 seconds left.

Savannah Hight (San Antonio, Texas) got a steal on the next UMHB possession, scoring a layup off the turnover to make it a four-point game with 34 seconds left.

After an ill-adviced 3-pointer from the corner for the Cru missed, the Bulldogs collected the rebound and scored a jumper from Kristen Lye (San Antonio, Texas) to make it 91-89 with just five seconds to go.

The Cru threw the ensuing inbounds pass the length of the court, where it was saved by a UMHB player to Hight at midcourt. The sophomore dribbled to the free-throw line and got a shot off at the buzzer, but it just missed.

The loss dropped Texas Lutheran's record to 1-2 on the year and gave the Bulldogs two road losses. The Cru improved to 2-0.

Dydalewicz was the star on Saturday for the Bulldogs. The junior poured in those 36 points on 11-of-23 shooting. She did plenty of damage from the charity stripe as well, finishing 13-of-16 from there.

The 89 points Texas Lutheran scored were the most it has put up in a game since dropping 93 against College of Wooster in mid-December of last season.

Both teams shot 37 percent from the field. The Bulldogs shot better from the free throw line, making 79 percent of those shots compared to 73 percent for UMHB. One area the Bulldogs will look to improve is their shooting from long range. They finished 2-of-15 from behind the arc, and Hight gave them their first make from out there with less than five minutes to go in regulation.

For the third straight game, the Bulldogs needed a second-half comeback. This time, they trailed by as many as 14 with 12:38 left in regulation. They battled their way back, eventually taking a 73-71 lead with just 29 seconds left after a Lye layup.

It looked like the Bulldogs would come away with an impressive road comeback, but Taylor Tucker knocked down a shot with eight seconds on the clock to tie it up. Chelsey Stolle had an open look at a jumper to win it at the buzzer, but the shot bounced off the rim and out.

Stolle (Falls City, Texas) was once again a defensive deterrent, coming up with a career-high nine blocks. She's averaging 6.3 blocks per game in TLU's first three games.

The Bulldogs continue their road trip at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Concordia-Texas. It will be the second time in three games the two teams have faced each other. The Bulldogs got the better of the Tornados in the first meeting, winning 67-59 at home.
