Free throws key in Women's Basketball's road win over Concordia

AUSTIN â€" For the second time in a week, Texas Lutheran defeated Concordia Texas, going on the road on Tuesday night and coming away with a 65-57 win.

For the second straight game, the Bulldogs were led in scoring by Taylor Dydalewicz (Dripping Springs, Texas). Just days after breaking the TLU Division III scoring record with 36 points against Mary Hardin-Baylor, Dydalewicz avoided a letdown with a smooth 23 points.

The win was the Bulldogs' first road victory of the season, and improved their record to 2-2 on the year. The Tornados dropped to 0-2 after the loss, with both defeats coming at the hands of TLU.

It wasn't just Dydalewicz who scored well for the Bulldogs. Three other players finished with double-digit scoring, led by Savannah HIght's 15 points. It was the second straight 15-point scoring night for the sophomore. Hight (San Antonio, Texas) also was a factor on the boards, notching eight rebounds, and on the defensive end, coming up with a career-high five steals.

Kristin Lye (San Antonio, Texas) notched her second double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and tying a career high with 13 rebounds. She has now scored in double figures in all four games, while averaging 9.5 rebounds per contest in the young season.

Karisa Cantu (San Antonio, Texas) was the other player in double figures. The senior chipped in with 11 points on 2-of-7 shooting.

For the first time this season, the Bulldogs weren't forced to forge a second-half comeback, as they went into the locker room with their first halftime lead. They led 28-26 at intermission.

The second half was close throughout, but the momentum shifted with about seven minutes left in the game. At that point, Concordia led 50-48, but the Bulldogs scored 10 straight points to take the 58-50 lead with 3:56 to play. Eight of the 10 points in that run came at the free throw line.

The free throw line was the difference on Tuesday. Texas Lutheran finished 22-of-27 from the charity stripe and scored 18 more points from those freebies than Concordia. The Tornados made 4 of their 10 foul shots on the night.

The quartet of Dydalewicz, Hight, Lye and Cantu finished 21-of-23 from the stripe.

The Bulldogs were actually outshot on the night, with the Tornados shooting 38 percent (23-of-60) from the field, while TLU shot 33 percent (21-of-64).

Texas Lutheran has now won three straight against Concordia and leads the all-time series 29-24.

The Bulldogs will have some time off for the Thanksgiving holiday coming up. They are back in action on the road against Texas-Pan American on Monday, Dec. 1. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in Edinburg, Texas.
