Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Second-half surge propels Women's Basketball to home-opening win

SEGUIN â€" Texas Lutheran outscored Concordia-Texas 40-25 in the second half, en route to a 67-59 win in the Bulldogs' home opener on Tuesday night.

Tuesday's win provided a bit of an added satisfaction after the Bulldogs had come oh-so-close to completing a second half comeback in their season opener. They proved up to the task in front of a raucous home crowd at Memorial Gymnasium on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs were clicking on all cylinders in the second half, shooting 46 percent from the field, while holding the Tornados to just 23 percent.

The win leveled the Bulldogs' record at 1-1, while dropping Concordia-Texas to 0-1 in the young season.

Karisa Cantu (San Antonio, Texas) led the second-half charge with 11 points in the frame. She finished with a game-high 18 points and just one rebound shy of a double-double. The senior point guard also added four assists to round out a stat-stuffing night.

Kristen Lye (San Antonio, Texas) continued her strong start to the season, notching the second double-double of her career with 10 points to go along with a career-high 13 boards.

One thing the Bulldogs did exceptionally well on Tuesday was protect the rim, blocking 10 shots on the night. It was the second time in the last two years they've reached double-figure blocks.

Unsurprisingly, the leader of the Bulldog block parade was Chelsey Stolle (Falls City, Texas). The senior rejected six shots, one shy of her career high.

Texas Lutheran trailed 34-27 at the half, but took the lead just a bit more than three minutes into second-half action. The Bulldogs burst out on a 12-2 run to open the half, with six of those points coming from Bianca Casas (Edinburg, Texas). Casas finished with eight points on the night.

Once they gained the lead, the Bulldogs never relinquished it the rest of the way. Eventually, they stretched their advantage to 57-47 with less than nine minutes left in the game.

The Tornados would get back within three with under three minutes remaining, but never closer than that.

The Bulldogs' next test will come on the road against Mary Hardin-Baylor. They take on the Cru at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22. TLU fans can enjoy a full day of Bulldog athletics, as the TLU football squad will face UMHB in the first round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs at noon that same day.
