SEGUIN â€" It looked like the Texas Lutheran women's soccer team was heading for a tie, but with just two minutes left in the second overtime period, freshman
Marisol Ramos scored to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 win over Southwestern on Friday.
Â
The two teams had battled to a standstill for more than 107 minutes, with neither defense allowing many great scoring chances. That all changed when
Sioned Kirkpatrick (San Antonio, Texas) received the ball on the break with loads of space to work with. She picked out a sprinting Ramos (San Antonio, Texas) in the box. The freshman found enough space and let loose a shot that handed the Bulldogs the win and gave Ramos her first collegiate goal.
Â
The win, TLU's third straight and fourth in five games, improved the Bulldogs' record to 7-7-1 overall and 6-3 in the SCAC. It also leapfrogged them over the Pirates and into third place in the standings, just percentage points behind Dallas for second.
Â
Ramos finished the game with two shots and two shots on goal. She was one of three Bulldogs with shots on target.
Karla Beltran (San Antonio, Texas) also had two, while
Kelly Lochte (New Braunfels, Texas) had one.
Â
Erin Rose (San Antonio, Texas) notched her fifth shutout of the season on Friday. The sophomore made six saves on the day, including three in the first half to keep the Pirates at bay. Her five shutouts leads the conference.
Â
The Bulldogs finished the day with 19 shots, while the Pirates finished up with 16. Those 19 shots were the third most the Bulldogs have managed this season, and they have now averaged 21.5 shots per game over the last two games.
Â
Texas Lutheran will look to keep the momentum rolling as it heads out on the road to take on No. 3 Trinity in San Antonio at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19.Â
