TLU Women move into sole possession of SCAC 2nd place with 64-53 road win

SHERMAN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs secured a key Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference road win Sunday with a 64-53 victory over the Austin College Kangaroos.

Already off to the best start in TLU's NCAA Division III women's basketball history, the Bulldogs added another victory in 2013-14 and improved to 13-5 overall and to 5-2 in the SCAC.

The 13 wins are the most by a TLU women's basketball squad in the university's NCAA DIII era, which officially began in 2002-03. (The Bulldogs began the transition from NAIA/NCAA DII in 1999-00 and became full members of NCAA DIII in 2002-03.)

Austin College, already holding a road win over SCAC leader Trinity this season, fell to 9-7 overall and to 4-2 in the SCAC with the loss to the Bulldogs.

The Kangaroos are a half-game behind TLU in the SCAC standings. TLU sits a half-game behind Trinity (14-4, 6-1) in the SCAC race for the post-season tournament's top seed.

In Austin College's Hughey Gymnasium, the Bulldogs held the Kangaroos to 21.1 percent shooting in the first half and to 32.6 percent for the game. TLU led 28-20 at the break.

TLU actually finished the game with a slightly lower overall shooting percentage (32.3 percent), but the Bulldogs took 16 more shots, made five more field goals (20 to 15), and connected on one more three-pointer (8 to 7). Made free throws were even at 16.

Austin College turned the ball over 20 times, and the Bulldogs recorded 11 steals. Four different Bulldogs had at least two steals.

TLU, among the NCAA Division III's leaders in assist-turnover ratio, totaled just nine turnovers on the afternoon.

Freshman guard/forward Savannah Hight (San Antonio/Brandeis) came off the TLU bench to score 16 points. She drained four of her five three-point attempts. Hight added four rebounds and two assists.

Junior point guard Karisa Cantu (San Antonio/MacArthur) contributed 12 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Junior center Chelsey Stolle (Falls City/Falls City) blocked four shots, grabbed two steals and collected seven rebounds.

Freshman forward Kristen Lye (San Antonio/Clark) nearly posted a double-double. She finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

Austin College received 18 points and three assists from Christine Kime and 17 points and 11 rebounds from Erin Riley.

TLU returns to its home court, Memorial Gymnasium, riding a four-game win streak. Next week, the Bulldogs host Centenary (La.) at 8 p.m. Friday and Austin College at 6 p.m. Saturday.

TLU will have live video webcasts and live stats for both contests. All TLU webcasts and live stats are free on tlubulldogs.com.
