SEGUIN â€" The Texas Lutheran women's basketball team held Millsaps to 15 second-half points and extended its winning streak to five games on Thursday after an 80-52 win inside Memorial Gymnasium.
Â
The Bulldogs outscored the Majors 40-15 in the second half while making 7-of-14 three-point attempts in those final 20 minutes.
Â
The win made it five straight and six of the last seven for the Bulldogs, improving their overall record to 8-3 on the year. Millsaps dropped to 5-4 with the loss.
Â
A dominant second half was the storyline, with the Bulldogs' defense smothering the Majors to just 4-of-25 shooting in the final 20 minutes. On the flipside, the Bulldogs shot almost 42 percent from the field and 50 percent from three in the second half. The Bulldogs sank 13 3-pointers on the day, matching their season high, which they hit in a December win over College of Wooster.
Â
Millsaps scored the first two points of the second half and cut the Bulldogs' lead to just one, but a 20-2 run capped off by back-to-back 3-pointers from
Taylor Dydalewicz opened up a 60-41 lead for TLU with 13 minutes left.
Â
Dydalewicz (Dripping Springs, Texas) was the lead performer for the Bulldogs on Thursday, scoring a season-high 21 points while also pulling down five rebounds. The sophomore was 6-of-9 from the field, 6-of-6 from the free throw line and 3-of-4 from behind the arc.
Â
Kristen Lye (San Antonio, Texas) finished with 13 points to go along with four rebounds, while
Karisa Cantu (San Antonio, Texas) and
Savannah Hight (San Antonio, Texas) also finished with double-figure scoring numbers.
Â
The four Bulldogs to score in double figures combined to shoot 8-of-15 from behind the arc and 17-of-19 from the free throw stripe.
Â
Cantu got the starting nod for the first time in her TLU career as she takes over starting point-guard duties for the injured
Natasha Benavides. The junior guard fared well in her first start, scoring those 12 points while also snagging six rebounds and dishing out six assists.
Â
The Majors were led by Velvet Johnson's 13 points. Miah Brooks was the only other player to reach double-digit scoring, putting up 10 points and six rebounds.
Â
A little more than four minutes into the game, Millsaps held a slight 9-7 advantage. A Dydalewicz jumper, followed by a Lye 3-pointer, gave the Bulldogs a lead they would never relinquish again. TLU would build a lead as large as 12 in the first half, but a late run by Millsaps cut the score to just 40-37 at the half.
Â
The Bulldogs' big run early in the second half opened up the double-digit lead. Eventually, TLU would grow the advantage to as large as 30 before head coach
Mel Dixon emptied his bench towards the end of the contest.
Â
With the big win over the Majors, Texas Lutheran has now wrapped up its non-conference portion of the schedule. The Bulldogs will tipoff their inaugural SCAC season against fellow conference-newcomer Schreiner at home at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4. The men's programs will precede the women's game and is scheduled to tipoff at 2 p.m. Live video and stats will be available via TLUBulldogs.com.
