GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Southwestern University hit 66.7 percent of its second-half shots and pulled away from Texas Lutheran in a 92-82 conference home victory on Saturday.
Southwestern improved to 5-9 overall and to 1-2 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
TLU dropped its second conference road game in two days and fell to 9-5 overall and to 1-2 in the SCAC.
Southwestern made 16 of its 24 shots in the second half and withstood TLU's second-half barrage from the three-point line.
After going 0-for-12 from the arc in the first half, TLU hit 11 of 16 long-range shots in the second half.
The Pirates nailed four three-pointers in the second half and went to the free throw line 19 times (making 17). Southwestern out-scored TLU 22-3 at the free throw line.
Jordan Owens led Southwestern with 28 points, four rebounds and three steals. Chelsea Leader added 20 points, five rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
The Bulldogs put five players in double figures. Freshman forward
Savannah Hight (San Antonio/Brandeis) led TLU with 19 points. She hit three three-pointers and eight of her 13 shot attempts.
Taylor Dydalewicz (Dripping Springs/Lake Travis) and
Kristen Lye (San Antonio/Clark) chipped in 16 and 13 points, respectively.
Natalie Vella (Corpus Christi/Moody) and
Karisa Cantu (San Antonio/MacArthur) each scored 12. Vella and Cantu each hit four three-pointers.
Southwestern led 39-36 at the half. The Pirates shot 48.4 percent in the first half and finished the game at 56.4 percent.
