Volleyball opens SCAC season with convincing road win

KERRVILLE, Texas â€" The Texas Lutheran volleyball squad opened up its inaugural SCAC season with a resounding 3-0 sweep on the road against Schreiner on Friday night.

The 25-20, 25-19, 25-16 win improved the Bulldogs' record to 7-3 (1-0 SCAC) on the year. Fellow conference-newcomer Schreiner fell to 3-7 (0-1 SCAC) with the loss.

Texas Lutheran will continue SCAC play in Kerrville tomorrow with two more matches against Southwestern and Trinity at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.

Against Schreiner the Bulldogs were dominant, holding the Mountaineers to -.074 hitting on the night. That figure was the lowest the Bulldogs have allowed all season.

A big reason for that defensive success was the nine blocks the Bulldogs recorded over the three sets. Three different players (Brette Threadgill, Mackenzie Benson and Anna Keeling) all recorded at least three blocks.

Keeling (Houston, Texas) led the way with a team-high four blocks on the night. The freshman middle blocker also chipped in with three kills on .167 hitting.

The nine total team blocks ties a season-high mark for Texas Lutheran. Friday's contest marked the second straight match the Bulldogs has reached that number.

Offensively, the Bulldogs were led by Vanecia Spencer (Grandview, Texas). The junior was the only Texas Lutheran player to notch double-digit kills, tallying 10 on efficient .500 hitting. She also tallied two blocks to get in on the defensive effort.

She played an especially key role in getting the Bulldogs off to a good start. In the first set, one which Texas Lutheran would eventually win 25-20, Spencer notched five of her 10 kills. She needed just eight attempts to do it too, hitting an impressive .625 in the set.

Junior Megan Lee (Universal City, Texas) also played a big role in the defensive domination, tallying a match-high 24 digs. It was the fourth consecutive match she's recorded at least 20 digs.
