Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Lee helps Volleyball to pair of wins in final day of Bulldog Classic

SEGUIN â€" It looks like the Texas Lutheran volleyball program needed just a day to knock off some of the preseason rust, finishing off the second day of the Bulldog Classic with a pair of wins over Texas Tyler and St. Joseph's (Long Island) on Susan Duke Court at Tostengard Activity Center on Saturday.

The Bulldogs were the only team in the five-team tournament to knock off Texas Tyler, defeating the Patriots 27-29, 25-19, 25-22, 25-20. TLU wrapped up the tournament with a clean 25-13, 28-26, 25-15 sweep of St. Joseph's (Long Island).

The pair of wins moved the Bulldogs' record to 2-1 on the year.

After the tournament concluded, Megan Lee was named the Tournament MVP. Lee (Universal City, Texas) finished the tournament with 53 digs (5.3/set).

Joining her on the All-Tournament Team for Texas Lutheran was Brette Threadgill, Vanecia Spencer and Manda Martin.

After dropping the first set 29-27 to Texas Tyler, the Bulldogs found their groove and won the next six sets they played in. Against the Patriots, TLU hit .234 and held the Patriots to just. 153 hitting.

The Bulldogs outplayed Texas Tyler in all facets of the game, recording more kills, more assists, more digs and more blocks than the Patriots.

Individually, Martin stood out in the afternoon, recording 36 assists while chipping in with seven digs and four kills.

She teamed well with freshman middle blocker Anna Keeling, who finished with 10 kills on .471 hitting.

Two other Bulldogs finished with double-digit kills. Spencer notched a match-high 16 kills (.268 hitting) while Threadgill was right behind with 15 kills of her own.

It was clear from the beginning of the second set the Bulldogs were playing at a top-notch level, getting out to an 8-3 lead and never looking back. They never trailed in the set.

The third set was a bit different with TLU trailing 13-16 midway through the set. That's when Keeling took serve and helped drive TLU to seven straight points behind three aces. Armed with the lead, the Bulldogs took care of business the rest of the way.

Against St. Joseph's (Long Island), Bulldog coach Tiffany Davis was able to get most everybody on the roster some playing time.

The Bulldogs were lethal from the service line against St. Joe's, notching 11 aces on the evening.

Martin (Burnet, Texas) continued her strong weekend, notching 15 more assists to go along with six digs in the tournament-concluding match.

Twelve Bulldogs notched at least one kill against St. Joseph's, with five players tying for the team lead in the category with three kills.

Texas Lutheran heads out to California next weekend for another tournament. The Bulldogs will compete against Hendrix College, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, Chapman and tournament-host California Lutheran on Friday, Sept. 6 and Saturday, Sept. 7.
