Volleyball rolls to first-day sweep in California

THOUSAND OAKS CALIF. â€" The Texas Lutheran Volleyball squad made it four straight wins after taking down both Hendrix College and Pomona-Pitzer in the first day of the California Lutheran Invitational on Friday.

The Bulldogs defeated Hendrix 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 15-25, 25-23) before finishing off the night with a 3-2 (25-22, 25-22, 12-25, 20-25, 15-9) thrilling defeat of Pomona-Pitzer.

With the pair of wins, the Bulldogs moved their record to 4-1 on the year. They will finish off the Cal Lutheran Invitational with matches against Chapman and California Lutheran tomorrow.

In the tournament's opening match against Hendrix, Texas Lutheran was paced by Vanecia Spencer (Grandview, Texas), who finished with 16 kills on .256 hitting. She also tallied 1.5 blocks and two digs.

Megan Lee (Universal City, Texas) was a menace from the service line, racking up three aces in the match. She also led the team with 21 digs.

Senior Manda Martin (Burnett, Texas) led the way with 33 assists.

In the Bulldogs' thrilling win over Pomona-Pitzer, the team was led on offense, once again, by Spencer. She was the only Bulldog to notch double-digit kills, finishing with 11 of them on .175 hitting.

As a team, the Bulldogs hit .100 and came up with seven blocks.

Leading them in blocks was Mackenzie Benson (Cibolo, Texas), who tallied 2.5 blocks. She enjoyed a productive day at the net, racking up 5.5 blocks total in the two matches.

Lee once again controlled the match defensively, tallying 37 digs, while Martin was the maestro running the offense, dishing out 27 assists.
