Biography

Matthew Hickey (Klein/Klein Collins) is a junior left-handed starting pitcher for Texas Lutheran.

2021: Hickey was a member of the 2021 SCAC Championship team that advanced to the NCAA Division III Baseball Wisconsin-Whitewater Regional. Was named to the SCAC Spring Academic Honor Roll for the third-straight year. Was also named to the Academic All-District First Team. Honored as a member of the SCAC Baseball All-Sportsmanship Team. Finished his sophomore year with a (3-1) record, a (4.08) ERA, made five starts, and had (14) overall appearances. Was tied for third-most games started (5), was fourth in innings-pitched (39.2) for the TLU pitching staff. Was third in the SCAC in batters struck out looking (19). Held opponents to a (.269) batting average against in (156) at-bats. Struck out (42) batters and allowed (20) base-on-balls. Gave up (42) hits, with only seven coming with extra-bases (five doubles and two home-runs). Season-high 12 strikeouts agaisnt Southwestern (Texas) in a non-conference, went 6.2 innings, but did not factor into the decision. 

2020: Earned his second SCAC Spring Academic Honor Roll award. Finished the year with a (3-0) record, with five total appearances, started four games and logged (22.1) innings pitched for the TLU pitching staff. His three victories tied for the most in SCAC before the season was cancelled to COVID-19. He was second in the SCAC, and led the TLU pitching staff with 28 strikeouts. Hickey was ranked sixth in the SCAC with a 2.82 ERA. Held opponents to a (.190) batting average against in (79) total at-bats. Was named the SCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for Week 4 when he pitched six shutout-innings in a (2-1) victory over Pacific Lutheran. Hickey struck out six, walked three in the win, and scattered five hits. 

2019: Hickey was named to the SCAC Spring Academic Honor Roll as a freshman for TLU. Earned SCAC All-Tournament Team honors. Was named SCAC Honorable Mention as a relief-pitcher. Finished his freshman campaign with a (6-1) record, made three starts and appeared in (17) total games. Was named the SCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for Week 12. Hickey picked up a save in TLU’s 9-7 win over Schreiner on Friday, and then pitched a TLU-record (10.1) innings of relief in the Bulldogs’ 21-inning loss to the Mountaineers on Saturday. Hickey set a new school-record for most innings pitched by a reliever, when he allowed just one run and six scattered hits. The very next weekend, Hickey picked up a victory when he pitched eight innings and blanked nationally-ranked Trinity (Texas), struck out three and gave up four hits in the SCAC semi-final at The Depot at Cleburne Station.

Hickey is a 2018 graduate of Klein Collins High School, where played for Chris Griffin.

Personal: His parents are Curtis and Kelly Hickey. Has one brother, Mithcell. His major is kinesiology and his minor is business.
